It is, finally, the right season for this Larkin poem.
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too.
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

Friends, I wrote a piece on poet Laura Gilpin, who died of glioblastoma in 2006. She is best known for “The Two-Headed Calf.” With gratitude to the Poetry Foundation for allowing me to try to restore this remarkable healthcare practitioner/poet’s legacy. www.poetryfoundation.org/articles/170...

I’m overjoyed & honoured to have won the Plaza Prize for Poetry judged by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natalie Diaz —whose work I adore & admire immensely. To have one’s poems read at all, let alone by one of your poet-heroes & to have them reflect so generously on the poem is a gift beyond measure.
