I used to be really embarrassed to tell people that I first heard a band or song I really liked, or discovered a book I loved, when it was featured or adapted in something grossly commercial, like an ad or in a movie. But the only people who judge for that are people whose opinions are dumb.

"Boy am I glad that my opinion on this doesn't matter" is something I find myself saying more and more. Maybe everyone should be saying it. I just don't understand how people can get so riled up about situations where them being riled up will accomplish nothing other than a stomach ache.

You know that thing where someone says out loud "who would possibly want/do/believe such a thing?" and you try offering a hypothetical thought process and suddenly this person is arguing with you as if you're the root cause? That's Reddit.

in other words TOM WAITS or BOB DYLAN singing their songs and connecting to the infinite are the most potent and powerful versions of that connection, not some 'dream' version with a 'perfect' singer. the antenna itself is a very important part of the transmission

I have to skip introductions for novels or comic collections, especially if it's by a famous author or something. They ALWAYS spoil the frickin' thing.

him sounds different... #omart
4 panel comic. panel 1: my sona smiling as speech bubbles surround mt using she/her pronouns and words like "girl."
panel 2: a new, squiggly scraggly speech bubble with the word "him" in it pops in from the right that blows everything away.
panel 3: the speech bubble shrinks and flitters down. i catch it in my hands. it lands with a plop. text reads: "It wasn't even said with malice. but it... it suddenly sounded wrong?"
panel 4: a close up shot of the crunchy speech bubble in my hands. more text surrounding it reads: it feels like a shirt that i've outgrown. did i just never notice? because it's all i've ever worn?"

This one’s been on my mind after listening to the dorky Steller’s jays in my backyard try to do the red-tailed hawk call… A LOT. They’ve been cracking me up and I can only imagine what the neighbor hawks are thinking. 🪶 #TerribleComicTuesday
sketchy comic, Panel 1: jay open mouth “SQUEEAA!”, Panel 2: second jay “lol what even was that? It’s more like… KREEEARR!”, Panel 3: both jays, first one “AHHAHAHA! That’s so bad! I got it… SKEEARREE!”, Panel 4: hawk in foreground looking down on a forest, the two jays are dots in the trees in the background, laughing and attempting the call more, hawk says “wtf.”

It's a new Tidal Farce! 🪶🦑 🐡 tidalfarce.com?pg=12#showCo...
Panels 1-3: a painterly rainbow colored flow of various sea critters gulls eat (sea stars, fish, squid, whale), music notes, gull chick and eggs, chips and fries. At the end of the river of color is a young gull screaming out this "song". The gull has a mottled white gray head with pinkish black tipped beak. There is motion lines between the two starting and end positions of the head while vocalizing. Panel 4: an adult gull, white head, yellow beak with some unidentifiable "food" in their beak, they say "oh wow! that's beautiful!" Panel 5: head of the young gull with a perky expression saying, "Thanks! so... can I have some of that?" Panel 6, part 1: close up of the adult gull, forward facing, angry face with the mystery food still dangling in their mouth. Panel 6, part 2: adult gull angrily charging young gull with, what we now see is rotting fish on th ground, fishy chunks flying out of their mouth and yelling "&#!@ you! Get outta here! Get!" Young gull is flinching leaning towards escape.

dolly parton was many things, but what i think resonates so deeply is that she was kind. ACTIVELY kind. when i talk about proving love, this is what i mean. ACTIVE kindness. ACTIVE love. it can be easy to dismiss kindness, but i think the reaction to her passing shows it is not at all a placeholder

I am repeatedly shown that people don't understand just how much pure luck goes into literally every single thing that happens to you every single moment of every single day. They all claim to understand the Butterfly Effect, then act as if EVERY MOMENT isn't determined by a flap of wings.

I tell people all the time that I got lucky with my career and it annoys a lot of them. "No, but you're good," they will say, and I will say, yes, I am good, and also here are all these people who write as well as I do but did not get the same break, so being good isn't the issue, being lucky is.

I just got tired of hating on things quite a while ago. There's so much GOOD stuff out there, and so many things that are 90% "bad" but have 10% that make it all worth, that I can't spend the energy to snark about something that clearly SOMEONE is enjoying.

Some day I will make a Linklater-style movie about growing up in the 90s. It will start with a video collage of everything the 90s means to me: Pokémon, Clinton, Pogs, Desert Storm, Nerf, Rugrats, Tamagotchi, the Matrix, Jurassic Park, modems, OJ-- All set to blink-182's "Dammit". This is key.

I keep seeing "nihilist" thrown around as some sort of... pejorative, I suppose? And I guess that makes sense if you've only heard about nihilism from the news and pop culture. The thing is, nihilism just means "doesn't believe the universe has a greater purpose." The end. Nothing else.

This is the point in our relationship where I try to convince you to watch The Orville Wait! Don't go! It's seriously some of the best Classic Trek you'll see. Watch S1E8: Into the Fold. It focuses on one of the best recurring interactions in the show, with Penny Johnson Jerald (from DS9)!

Too many people feel ashamed when they make something the best they know how and fall short of perfection or when they ask others for help. Gen AI protects from that shame and vulnerability. But trying & failing IS HOW YOU IMPROVE and learning from others is GOOD ACTUALLY. Shame & Gen AI are liars.

So there's this fella, same name as the piano kid in Charlie Brown. He stuffs a cat in a box and flips a quarter: heads the cat lives, tails it dies. The nuts thing he says is that, while the coin's spinning, the cat is alive AND dead. Calls it Quarter Theory. Thing is, he's having a laugh.

I've talked to a lot in the queer community about this same feeling, so let me just say this: If you're seeing Pride events and saying to yourself "wow, it would be cool to be part of that community. I'm happy for them," that's awesome! It MIGHT mean you belong here, though. So think about it.
