A ★★★★ review of The War of the Worlds: Next Century (1981)
Peak 80s TV/media paranoia with enough depth to make it feel well-founded. It works as an incisive criticism of the way media is utilised as a propaganda tool, especially with its evocation of the War...

Imagine Jesús Franco and Michelangelo Antonioni alchemy-merged and you get Jean Rollin. Fascination and The Living Dead Girl especially are also just HUMMING with this exact same radioactivity. Masterful crafting of atmosphere.

Moody perfection. Gets going brutally quickly and then so confidently, alluringly, walks the fog-hazed line between the contemporary arthouse modernists and the most abstract of exploitation and splatter auteurs. Viciously political, furious about classism, gnarly and slimy as it is eerie gorgeous.
Goopy, jam-like blood oozing onto flooring Beautiful French countryside in sunset Two women holding each other watching the sun dip behind the hills A woman mid-decapitation, the hideous gore and blood elevating the (wonderfully) fake head prop

Jean Rollin’s The Living Dead Girl (1982) is an elusive elevation of the paradoxically artful smut into Michelangelo Antonioni’s Red Desert Of The Vampires. Undead imagery at its most stereotypical (farcical?), silk-lined coffins and all, an extension of environmental decay and industrial poison.
A factory’s vicious barbed wire A vampire slicing open a victim’s throat with her nails Blood trickling down a stone staircase A bloody vampire hand gently touching a photograph of two women embracing

Rollin’s usual pornographic playfulness with lesbianism feels so genuinely tragic here, and the whackadoodle plot of toxic waste and doomed yuri is so compelling in the familiar vampire crypts and horrifically brutal feedings. Hammer pastiche and New Wave echoing becomes a colder, desolate fantasy.

Jean Rollin’s Fascination (1979) stretches the paradoxical meld of Kafkaesque sophistication and lowbrow perversion about as far as it will go. A patient stroll through a steady nightmare radiating dread through the liminality of decaying French decadence and Philippe D'Aram’s unreal score.
A Victorian/Edwardian woman in park-strolling finery standing in the middle of a slaughterhouse A woman all on white standing directly where sunlight obscures her The same woman, naked but for a flowing black cape, welding a scythe Two women, naked, making love

An all-too human vampirism born of the devastating vanity and existential terror of the idle rich, women minted into predators in a man’s mortal world, and queerness clinging to psychotic indulgence for the faintest grasp at survival. Trash cinema as pure pretentious beguilement, shrouded in fog.

Jean Rollin’s The Iron Rose (1973) crawls into the grave of the French New Wave’s still-warm corpse and drags the soft summer color spectacle of Jean Rabier out into the soaking wet and freezing cold cemetery, moldering and overgrown. Gothic slow cinema, dreamlike and unreal.

Quite a spooky little thing, riding the presumptions of an insufferable arthouse romance to display a nighttime of purgatorial mood swings, senseless character logic stoked and spurred by desecrating the dusted dead, fucking in the testaments to mortality. B-cinema art film!

While not quite the quality of The Grapes of Death or The Living Dead Girl (his two best), and definitely one of his more awkwardly porny outings, Jean cast something morose and thoughtful towards human connection surviving, despite it all and without recall, a zombie outbreak at its most subdued.

Jean Rollin’s The Night of the Hunted (1980) is where environmental horror and medical abuse nightmares seep and creep into the mind, body, and soul. A near future of Earth’s polluted destruction as a viral bleeding memory, people slowly losing their names and will in a lonely and empty metropolis.
A woman walking, aimlessly, down a gated sky bridge Dead trees sprouting amongst cold, sleek buildings A sleek glass skyscraper framed by dead, bare trees Two hands, one bloodied, reaching for each other

Jerzy Skolimowski's The Shout (1978): an Evil Cucking Movie™ with a more interesting tease of supernatural lore than it utilizes, but you can only have a good time with a slow burn of British complacency masking great evil that sluts out Alan Bates, Tim Curry, and John Hurt all in equal measure.

Maybe I just have too much love in my heart (or too much wine in my glass), but I kinda loved Curtains? You can reeaaaaaaaally see the giallo influence in its crumbly cohesion, dreary dreaming, and scuffed logic, and there's so much merit in the slasher genre already eating itself like that by 1983?

Pere Portabella’s Cuadecuc, Vampir (1970) might just be the most interesting Dracula film ever made. Raw footage, B-roll, outtakes, effects and makeup tests, and BTS scraps from Jesús Franco’s own already eclectic Spanish gothic adaptation edited into a rough-yet-slippery reshape of the novel.

Franco’s half-hearted Victoriana and characteristic fugue state of storytelling is stripped to either Cassavetesesque realism or flatout broken diegesis. Immersion as a corrosion, the out-of-frame fakery and wires integral to every shot and cut. Dracula was real, and his name was Christopher Lee.

NEAR DARK is still the best American vampire film. It rejects most European/gothic tropes and rewrites the vampires as purely American myth figures: bikers, cowboys, traveling serial killers, Civil War soldiers, and gangsters.
