Absolutely my favorite Yotsuya Kaidan adaptation after Nobuo Nakagawa’s (which gets a lot of clear references and shot-for-shots here).

A little thrilled to hit some of my (few, born and raised on those Draculas 😅) Hammer blindspots this Halloween, and there really is SO much fun to be had with Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter (1974). A gasping clasp at fading relevancy that’s just about as perfectly autumnal as you could want?

Unfortunately I don’t think Jamil Dehlavi’s Born of Fire (1987) is anywhere near the skull bullet I was counting on an Islamic Dunwich Horror to be, but it’s worthwhile a look if just because I had to come up with that sentence. Tepidly lyrical. GREAT images.

Like absolutely there are all-too-real torture demons and Hell witches running around slashering people to mincemeat, but it is all in the lens of how a child would see it, and exaggerated and worsen. It went far from home in an overnight school full of strange and scary adults. Skinamarink!!!

I showed my brother Suspiria and I really honed in on the aspect that the story was originally 8 to 10-year-olds in a boarding school for little girls. It really is mesmerizing how every single thing is scary because it is exactly how these things would be warped by a kids’ over active imagination.

While not quite the quality of The Grapes of Death or The Living Dead Girl (his two best), and definitely one of his more awkwardly porny outings, Jean cast something morose and thoughtful towards human connection surviving, despite it all and without recall, a zombie outbreak at its most subdued.

Jean Rollin’s The Night of the Hunted (1980) is where environmental horror and medical abuse nightmares seep and creep into the mind, body, and soul. A near future of Earth’s polluted destruction as a viral bleeding memory, people slowly losing their names and will in a lonely and empty metropolis.

And God, WHAT a slasher mask? I’ve seen the big ice skating chase ‘n kill before, but it really is such a phenomenal sequence, and I dunno. I find this fucker, mask and body language and slow-mo fever fugue and all, genuinely so distressing?

Maybe I just have too much love in my heart (or too much wine in my glass), but I kinda loved Curtains? You can reeaaaaaaaally see the giallo influence in its crumbly cohesion, dreary dreaming, and scuffed logic, and there's so much merit in the slasher genre already eating itself like that by 1983?

Franco’s half-hearted Victoriana and characteristic fugue state of storytelling is stripped to either Cassavetesesque realism or flatout broken diegesis. Immersion as a corrosion, the out-of-frame fakery and wires integral to every shot and cut. Dracula was real, and his name was Christopher Lee.

Pere Portabella’s Cuadecuc, Vampir (1970) might just be the most interesting Dracula film ever made. Raw footage, B-roll, outtakes, effects and makeup tests, and BTS scraps from Jesús Franco’s own already eclectic Spanish gothic adaptation edited into a rough-yet-slippery reshape of the novel.

Found Chantal Akerman’s The Meetings of Anna (1978) so miserably worthwhile. Bressonian in many ways, but the immersive frames of lengthy takes and eons of silence can’t be filled with viewer projection because they’re already full-to-bursting with feeling, pain, loneliness.
