I remember when hideable cameras were called 'spy cameras' because 'pervert cameras' wasn't a good marketing term, but the people making them knew who they were selling them to.

What's your favorite comics/graphic novel adaptation of horror fiction?
A page from Junji Ito's Frankenstein. A panel of the monster laughing maniacally was a popular meme for a while before being supplanted in the universal unconscious by sickos.gif

*sigh* No, a recording of someone doing karaoke of a Disney song is very unlikely to fly by as fair use. Even if you're reviewing the cruise-line where it happened. And if you're a media professional of almost two decades you should know that.

This gave me a good laugh. (from @accordionguy.bsky.social 's "Saturday Picdump" of tech-related memes, cartoons, etc.)
A military execution by firing squad. The condemned person is tied to a wooden post in front of a wall. The condemned man is covered in black ink, with overspray on the wall behind him leaving a negative shadow on the wall. Ten or so feet in front of the prisoner, a large squid lays on the ground, a spray of squid ink stretching between it and the prison.

To one side, two soldiers stand. One, an officer, holds a piece of paper in his hands, looking at it closely.

Looking at all this, I don't think Newsom is going to run for President. Instead it looks like he's trading in all his political credit for corporate credit, and looking for a comfortable landing in a board position. He knows full well his time is up, so he doesn't have to pretend any more.

Chip tech has been fighting a diminishing returns battle for a while now. On the memory side, the process is at the physical limit for dram cells, and layer stacking them is not the quadratic gains of old. Unlike Tech Bros and Wile E Coyote, I don't bet against the laws of physics.

Apple decided that Big Data LLM based AIs wasn't the way to go, and have moved to on-device systems as the only cost sustainable way to move forward. This has actually annoyed a lot of customers who now have a 14GB model dataset subtracted from their device storage, and don't see benefit worth that.
110
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
Unless one of them made a major breakthrough in the design process, they're all under the same constraints. These chips are all produced in the same limited number of fabs, with the same limited number of processes available to them.
110
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
And on *top* of that is the 9% annualized failure rate bumping up the asset depreciation. Which isn't reducing the TCO *per unit purchased*. And that's only going to increase over time, because these units were all shipped with age related leak-risk liquid-metal packages in the cooling solution.
010
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
NVidia's claim of TCO efficiencies have not been born out on the bottom line of Data Centre operations. They have been on the diminishing returns curve for a long time now.
220
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
Again, this doesn't include the additional power cost of cooling that TDP wattage back down. Every watt going in needs to be displaced back out by the cooling system. Plus all the rest of the system. To be a real efficiency gain, the curve needs to track the *TCO* which it currently does not.
110
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
There's a good chance that a significant number of compute units that have been sitting in a warehouse waiting for the datacenter to be built, are already unusable because of this.
000
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
Hey, want to know what the next ticking timebomb is for AI Datacentres... It's all the datacenter compute units that were shipped with "Liquid Metal" interface layers in their chip package cooling systems. The seals on those will eventually degrade, and spill conductive liquid onto the boards.
100
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
The perverse part is that they actually use bigger TDP Wattage as a marketing point of Data Centres because it's a Really Big Number. And Bigger Number always better.
000
Jay Blanc @jay.blan.cc · 29/09/2026
This is incorrect, because it is on the price of purchase not on the price of operation. The problem with Nvidia's product is that performance gains have been on the basis of increasing TDP wattage, which has a double whammy of the cost of running the chip and the cost of cooling the chip.

No.1 reason it would end real bad for the US if they tried to invade Canada to forcably make it a state... Canada switching off the electricity interconnects would completely wreck the US's electrical grid and cause immediate irreparable damage across the continental US.
