Very excited to put out this new preprint from the lab that represents our 3rd paper now in the lab's move into the field of identifying bioactive molecules in bacteria using C. elegans and studying how they regulate animal physiology. Ten years ago Tami, Roy, and I released a movie we made of antibiotic resistance evolving in real time. I thought maybe a couple thousand people tops would see it. I couldn't have imagined it would be seen millions of times, and be taught from middle school through the graduate level worldwide

Did you know that the cells of old animals contain much less mRNA than the cells of young ones? Let me share with you some results from an ongoing project in the lab, where we are finding that a progressive depletion of total mRNA abundance is a crucial part of aging 1/22

I love our Formas 3920, now ThermoFisher, they keep the temperature super stable +/- 0.1C, with air flow for each shelf, they are large and very well built.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our technician and former undergrad Dante Ashih. He'll be starting his Biology PhD at the University of Wisconsin at Madison this fall. Dante developed the Wormtrails package for viewing C. elegans movement, and we can't wait to see the great science he explores next!

We have not looked at globins. Interesting point about noise. It'll be intesting to study the signal to noise properties of the H2O2 sensing neurons. I2 can sense H2O2 at intracellular concentrations likely of 10 to 100 nM, so much lower than components of the sensing machinery like PRXs.

Great questions. There are likely lots of reasons for the varying sensistivities. We are actively working on that question for a follow up paper, focusing on what makes I2 so good at sensing H2O2.

My former undergad Juli Stanley gave an awesome PhD dissertation talk on how E. coli translates mRNAs that do not have a leader sequence (no Shine-Dalgarno 🤯)! It was such a joy to see them shine so brightly! We had a mini lab reunion too, with Juli and former grad student Jodie Schiffer.
