We found that Australian media reporting on illicit tobacco-related crimes increased over the past two decades, particularly since 2018. These findings highlight a need for improved border detection measures, investment in enforcement, and other deterrent activities.

The MUP had the desired effect, reducing the sale of cheap, higher-strength alcohol by making products more expensive. Retailers showed more support when they understood it was targeted at harm reduction. ‘On trade’ retailers, such as pubs, said they thought the policy created fairer competition.
