‼️New research @alisonritter.bsky.social& Paul Kelaita examine police diversion for simple drug possession through a different lens: ideas, not just evidence, drawing on Katherine Smith’s typology of ideas, using interviews, policy documents, advocacy materials, media coverage and Drug Summit reports

🧐 Have you asked yourself ‘what is drug policy research’? Is it studies of decisions of government, or is it bigger than that? @alisonritter.bsky.social & Jonah Bunyon have a go at tackling this issue, by analysing papers published in @ijdrugpolicy.bsky.social 📄 Read the article: lnkd.in/g_aVwGnc
@alisonritter.bsky.social & Jonah Bunyon, in their latest paper, have a go at tackling this issue, by analysing papers published in @inter, exploring policy research from the perspective of different policy components (agenda-setting, formation and decision, implementation, and evaluation).

🔎Key findings: 34% of published work in IJDP was defined as ‘policy research’ with half using qualitative methods, and half using quantitative methods.
Policy evaluation was common (36.5%); but policy implementation research (22.4%) was close behind.

The authors also note that ‘drug policy research’ can be made otherwise – discussing three alternative conceptualisations: as research that aims to inform policy, as street-level implementation, or as policy ecology – each of which boundary ‘drug policy research’ differently. They hope the work stimulates ongoing conceptual debate and theoretical interest in 'what is drug policy research?'

📢New Research Paul Kelaita, @keelinoreilly.bsky.social & @alisonritter.bsky.social in their recent paper find that the use of public opinion data that are not differentiated by geography may suggest homogenous levels of policy support and engagement despite much heterogeneity doi.org/10.1111/dar....
