Archer’s resignation from the London mayoral race after it was revealed he lied in court was the thing that got Paul Foot up from his sickbed and contributing again, having first started chronicling Archer’s lies and misdemeanours in 1969. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 992, December 1999.

How many interim change managers does it take to change a lightbulb? Three: one to do the post change planning, one to do the post change evaluation, and one to get paid a fortune for telling everyone why they're still in the dark.

He was a Nazi, definitely, but it's doubtful that he was a traitor.

He wasn't British, so there was a question about whether he could be a traitor to Britain. He had obtained a British passport by deception, and used it to travel, so it was argued that was enough.

The trouble with Administration is that so many people outside its sphere fondly and erroneously imagine they know so much more about its apparent simpleness. That it should ever appear to be simple is a great compliment.

I'm now old enough feel nostalgic about my youth, when life was more innocent. Perhaps I'm just seeing the past through rose-tinted glasses, but politicians - even the ones I disliked - seemed motivated to improve society, compared with the cynical shower we have now. What became of Kier Starmer?

It would seem to depend on whether Streeting has the support to stand against Burnham. If Starmer resigns on Monday, nominations close on Friday 10th of July, and Burnham is the only candidate, Starmer could go to see the King on Monday the 13th. A leadership contest would take us into the Autumn.
