interest or warmth of feeling)". Given that, "mementō mortis" would have a connotation of "be mindful of death" or "reminisce about death" and "mementō mortem" would have a connotation closer to "recall death". In the case of the Obra Dinn device, I think the accusative actually makes more sense.

According to dcc.dickinson.edu/grammar/lati..., meminī takes the accusative when referring to "the literal sense of retaining in the mind what one has seen, heard, or learned", and genitive for "to be mindful or regardful of a person or thing, to think of somebody or something (often with special

I do think it would work. "Mementō morī" means "remember to die", commonly translated as "remember that you must die". "Mementō mortis" and "mementō mortem" both mean "remember death". The difference is that "mortis" is genitive and "mortem" is accusative.

OK, since this thread has blown up a bit, I think it's worth clarifying in a new thread to what extent the 'GenAI is asbestos for the mind' analogy might hold up, and where it breaks down (as even useful analogies always do): 1/n

I think it is evidence of how so much we have been made to think that gaining an audience is the goal of life in this attention-seeking economy that saying "a rapist shouldn't seek a public persona that is available for consumption" is taken as equivalent to saying they "can never rejoin society."

The big exception is games, they tend to implement their own text boxes instead of the ones that come with their OS or desktop environment and often don't allow the full roster of shortcuts.

It's not universal, but these shortcuts are pretty common across applications and operating systems (on the mac they tend to be slightly different, you might need to replace Ctrl with Cmd for example).

This is a great example of one of the ways AI is actually going to endanger / kill huge numbers of people. Shitty chatbots cause their special sort of brain rot to the people who package intelligence for our shot-callers. They take the bad ideas from there. www.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...
It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.

The report, according to one of the sources, was “entirely false.” But it also “almost started a war,” the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.

Of course etymology isn't destiny, but if you're gonna make that claim, at least get the etymology right! Anyway, I suggest you read up on the history of the term "genocide". Lemkin's original conception of it was much more expansive than what the UN eventually adopted.

You know what also shares an etymology with the word "genes"? Gender, genre, gentle, genteel, gentile, general, genus, ... The "geno" in genocide doesn't refer to genes, it refers to a group of people (Ancient Greek: γένος, meaning race, tribe, nation, cast, class, kind, etc).

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

The thing liberals fundamentally don't understand is that trans people are losing rights they already had. We're not asking for more, we're asking not to lose what we already had for decades. Most sports leagues and the Olympics had inclusion criteria for decades without issue.
Screenshot of an X (formerly Twitter) exchange discussing political pragmatism and the Overton window.
The initial post by onion person (@CantEverDie) reads:
> "doesn't matter, this is about what the right is able to push with the overton window. first its democrats needing to disavow trans women in sports to get elected, next it'll be agreeing to ban access to HRT to get elected. we've seen how this plays out"
>
A reply from Nick Pappas (@NickAPappas) reads:
> "Are you insane? The Overton window didn’t even include this discussion until recently. The public has never been in favor of desegregating the sports by sex.
> Personally I’m glad Barack Obama ran against gay marriage in 2008. Not because that was the right position, or one he even actually held, but because he knew the public wasn’t with him on it. If he hadn’t won he wouldn’t have been able to appoint 2 of the justices who ultimately voted in the majority for Obergefell.
> Lincoln in 1860 didn’t even run on abolishing slavery! He just wanted to stop its expansion. And thankfully he did that and won because a more extreme and morally correct position would have lost. As a result he was able to win the Civil War and push through the 13 amendment.
> Political practicality is the entire history of progress in America. There’s no other way."
