I keep thinking about that quote “the lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on.” WRT the C&S situation and I just feel for my friend who has to persevere. Obviously I’m super biased about the whole thing but I find it all really upsetting.

One of the (many) things that's depressed me about this whole situation regarding Charity and Sylvia is that Tillie's book is a masterpiece of comics work. @thene.bsky.social articulates it beautifully here. Tillie's book is beautiful, it's staggering, it absolutely stands on its own.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

The idea that we shouldn’t speak ill of the dead seems ridiculous to me. What more important time is there to set the public memory of the good or bad a person has put into the world than when they die. It’s the gift we give to those we loved, and the bill due for those who made others miserable.

This was required reading in my 6th grade language arts class at a magnet school in FL in 2000/2001. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Many of my classmates went on to read LotR, but I found them too dense/dull by comparison at that age. Chronicles of Prydain was more my jam.

The amount of independent work and research that Walden undertook - as detailed in the online notes - is considerable. I realize this may not satisfy Prof. Cleves or those who want it labeled as an "adaptation," but I see review bombers on Amazon are calling it a rip off and that is dead wrong.

The controversy over the Charity & Sylvia GNs has raised many issues about historical research and how non fiction GNs should handle citations, but the idea that it is a "rip off" is grossly unfair to Tillie Walden. I picked up a galley at ALA and this is 250 pages of densely reimagined storytelling

The book is also not essentially a graphic adaptation of Cleves' "C&S," as some are claiming. Tillie read her own primary sources, did her own research, and the book is sewn together with many invented scenes and dialogue to aid in narrative creation and emotional resonance.
