True. It also keeps the file sizes from getting unwieldy since most people don't like to merge/flatten their layers :)

My books were 600dpi with thresholded line art (then some color holds added) with color layers underneath. Printed super crisp, but I kept everything in a single PSD, no layering after the fact, except the text being in InDesign.

Could also be the paper that the book is printed on contributing to making it look fuzzier. ABC has lots of different editions, which may be on cheaper, textured paper for mass market. Also any editing whatsoever to an image after thresholding removes the threshold.

Didn’t sell a single copy of my GN A-Okay at SPX to consumers but I lost count of the number of librarians who came up to tell me how much they/their kid patrons love it and how they’ve had to order multiple copies. Immensely grateful for libraries and librarians ♥️

Shout out to these zebra pens I bought years ago bc of some article that said they dry quickly on glossy paper. They’re double ended and have lasted me literally years. Idk if they still sell this pack, but if you’re on the hunt and don’t want to use sharpies 👀🙌🏻✍🏻

That's part of what upsets me about how The Beat *immediately* updated their review, taking the claim as gospel before doing an analysis themselves. And now it's been updated again without an editor's note. Total lack of journalistic ethics.

I keep thinking about that quote “the lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on.” WRT the C&S situation and I just feel for my friend who has to persevere. Obviously I’m super biased about the whole thing but I find it all really upsetting.

One of the (many) things that's depressed me about this whole situation regarding Charity and Sylvia is that Tillie's book is a masterpiece of comics work. @thene.bsky.social articulates it beautifully here. Tillie's book is beautiful, it's staggering, it absolutely stands on its own.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.
