The reason so many of yesterday’s free-speech champions transitioned so easily into today’s pro-Trump censors is that their definition of free speech never included the right of others to talk back. They were not defending a universal right to freedom of speech; they were defending a right to monologue. They could say what they want, and you could shut up and like it. The cynicism of the effort can be known by its fruits: an administration that issues executive orders “protecting” free speech while engaging in the most sweeping campaign of state censorship since the Red Scare.

Wie Paris in 10 Jahren seine Luft um 40% verbesserte und so vorzeitige Todesfälle durch Smog halbieren konnte, ist so eine krasse Erfolgsgeschichte. 2019 litten 400.000 Menschen an schlechter Luft. 2023 nur noch 5.000 und nächstes Jahr sollen es Null sein. Für eine 🇪🇺 Großstadt ist das beispiellos❤️

Gefühle und ästhetische Theorien im Angesicht der Gewaltgeschichte Ästhetische Theorien sind oft an bestimmten Leitgefühlen und Gefühlskonzepten ausgerichtet. Gefühle sind hingegen ästhetisch verfasst – sie werden erfahren und ausgedrückt in Zusammenhang mit Narrativen, Fantasien oder Körperbildern. Gefühle und Ästhetiken wiederum sind beide historisch situiert, das heißt, dass sie bestimmten historischen Kontexten entspringen und – mal explizit, mal implizit – in diese eingreifen. Der Workshop Gefühle und ästhetische Theorien im Angesicht der Gewaltgeschichte sucht das Wechselverhältnis von ästhetischen Theorien, Gefühlen und ihren historischen Erfahrungsräumen anhand von exemplarischen Untersuchungen zu erkunden. Ein besonderer Fokus soll dabei auf solchen Theorien und Gefühlen liegen, die auf der einen Seite Fragen der Gewalt, Macht und Unterdrückung berühren, und auf der anderen Seite Fragen des Überlebens, des Widerstandes und der Reparation. Ästhetische Theorien und ihre Gefühle Wichtige Impulse für diese Fragen stammen aus dem Umfeld des Chicago Feel Tank und der gegenwärtigen ästhetischen Theorie. So heterogen diese Ansätze sind, verbunden sind sie durch die gegenwartsdiagnostische und gefühlsorientierte Analyse von Künsten, populärer Kultur und ästhetischen Praktiken. So untersucht Ann Cvetkovich in Depression: A Public Feeling das feeling bad als einen mehr-als-individuellen Zustand, der eine historisch-politische Diagnostik ermöglicht, von ästhetischen Sorgepraktiken gelindert werden kann und der durch spekulative Genealogien anders als medizinisch gerahmt werden muss. Sianne Ngai hat in Our Aesthetic Categories und Ugly Feelings an der Neukonturierung von ästhetischen und Gefühls-Kategorien wie dem Süßen oder der „animatedness“ gearbeitet und sie kritisch auf kapitalistische Lebensformen zurückbezogen. Lauren Berlants Konzept des cruel optimism beschreibt eine Haltung, die vor dem Hintergrund der Aufkündigung des Versprechens von Aufstiegsmobilität und neoliberaler Prekarisierung gleichzeitig das Subjekt beschädigt und ihm eine lebensbejahende Bindung an die eigene Zukunft ermöglicht. Hieraus resultieren eine Reihe von Fragen: Inwieweit sind Künste ein privilegierter Zugangspunkt, um Gefühle zu denken, zu identifizieren, herzustellen oder zu verändern? Wieso und wie arbeiten gerade politisch orientierte Theorien mit Leitgefühlen und Paradigmen aus den Künsten? Inwiefern werden ästhetische Theorien durch die Setzung von zentralen Gefühlen bestimmt? Gefühle und ihre Geschichte Solche Einzelanalysen und Reperspektivierungen von ästhetischen Kategorien und Gefühlen gewinnen an Kontur durch ein stärkeres Augenmaß für die Historizität und Philosophie von Gefühlen. So hat William Reddy den Begriff der emotional regimes geprägt, um normative, kollektive Gefühlsordnungen zu beschreiben. Monique Scheer spricht von „emotionalen Praktiken“, die die Erfahrung und den Ausdruck von Gefühlen modulieren und modellieren. Forscher:innen wie Ute Frevert, Jan Plamper, Frank Biess und Bettina Hitzer haben grundlegend die Geschichtlichkeit und Geschichte von Emotionen und ihrer disziplinären Einhegung untersucht – dazu gehören Untersuchungen der Wissenschaftsgeschichte von Gefühlen zwischen Kultur- und Naturwissenschaften, der methodologischen Frage von Gefühlen in der Historiografie oder Untersuchungen von Einzelgefühlen wie der „deutschen Angst“, Mitgefühl oder Ehre. Solche Perspektiven betonen die Wandelbarkeit, Gemachtheit und Hybridität von Gefühlen und helfen, sie nicht zu unpolitischen, individuellen und isolierten Entitäten zu verklären. Über welche Gefühle und ihre (ästhetischen) Praktiken lassen sich Kontexte von Gewalt, Macht und Unterdrückung sowie von Überleben, Widerstand und Reparation neu denken? Inwieweit sind Gefühle besonders von ästhetischen Praktiken beeinflusst? Wo markieren Künste oder ästhetische Theorien Brüche in der Geschichte von Gefühlen? Gewalt und Reparation Im Kontext einer Historiographie des Wechselverhältnisses von Gewalt, Widerstand und Überleben spielen Fragen des Sinnlichen, des Ephemeren, von Wahrnehmung und Gefühlen, von Zeit, Raum und Körperlichkeit eine zunehmende Rolle, gerade auch um sich der Perspektive der Gewaltbetroffenen anzunähern, die oft nur über fragmenthafte, a-diskursive, geradezu stumme Quellen zu erschließen sind. So hat Iris Därmann im Kontext der Shoah nach aisthetischen Widerstandsformen in Auschwitz-Birkenau wie etwa dem Sammeln von Träumen gefragt. Und Nikolaus Wachsmann hat eine Annäherung an die gelebte Erfahrung der Lagerhäftlinge als ein wichtiges Forschungsdesiderat genannt. Eine solche Orientierung auf die Sinnlichkeit und Kreativität des Überlebens führt zu einer methodologischen Erweiterung historiografischen Arbeitens als ihr mit klassischen Quellen wie bürokratischen Dokumenten nicht beizukommen ist und Umwege über ästhetische und künstlerische Quellen und Zeugnisse vonnöten sind. Im Workshop sollen gerade anhand über die Analyse des Ästhetischen und Emotionalen ein solcher Zugang zu epistemisch schwer erreichbaren, minorisierten Perspektiven erprobt werden. Wie erlaubt die Fokussierung von emotionalen und kreativen Praktiken eine Erweiterung der Geschichtsschreibung von Widerstand und Überleben? Wo hilft eine Sensibilisierung für ästhetische Formen bei der Lektüre von marginalen, ephemeren oder beschädigten Quellen?
