Don't just doomscroll, send a message to the Premier telling her hands off Edmonton. And tell your councillor and mayor to NOT comply in advance to this overreach.

Regarding my last two reposts: it's worth noting, once again, that authoritarian overreach by provincial/state governments to overturn any municipal government policies they dislike is happening all over North America, because these assholes all compare notes. Let's not silo our responses.

Forget about banning American imports. In Alberta, the government is actively importing as many aspects of their political culture as possible. The latest: election denialism.

Why Trump Is Targeting Green Card Path Used by Microsoft, Other Tech Firms
From the start of his second term, President Donald Trump has made it a top priority to restrict opportunities for non-Americans to gain entry or remain in the US. In the latest action on that front, his administration said on Oct. 8 that it would indefinitely suspend the ability of a number of technology companies, including Microsoft Corp., to sponsor foreign employees for permanent residency in the US.

Meta is taking down the accounts of gay bars while not just allowing but RESTORING this type of material
As we reported the story, Meta eventually pulled down an account we shared with it that had uploaded a particularly disturbing array of AI videos that depicted children being viciously beaten and forced to eat trash, as well as many more appalling scenarios including a young girl being locked in a freezer by a kidnapper.

But after we published our piece, we were surprised to see that the account had been reinstated, along with its sickening cache of videos. We reached out to Meta to ask why the account was live again and received a curt response from a spokesperson.

Screenshot reads: Donald Trump's unbound corruption and authoritarianism will require more than just ordinary checks and balances.

"If you want to know the law, you must look at it as a bad man does, who cares only for the material consequences," wrote legendary Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell
Holmes.

"Not as a good one, who finds his reasons for
conduct, whether inside the law or outside of it, in the vaguer sanctions of conscience."

Donald Trump is a Holmesian bad man, and an even worse president, pushing the bounds of corruption and authoritarianism, unbound by norms, the rule of law, a sense of shame, or even care for others. To deal with such a bad man and bad president — one who truckles to adversaries like Russian President Vladimir Putin, flouts Congress, swims in self-enrichment, and fails to take meaningful action as Americans die by the tens of thousands on his watch - will require more than the ordinary processes, checks and balances, and honor that have guided and constrained other presidents.

Carney’s greatest asset is his credibility, and lack of a credible alternative. This incident damages his government’s credibility: its ability to be truthful to Canadians & its commitment to defending core interests against a predatory neighbour whose threats ironically make the conference’s point.

3 All signs point to Canada withdrawing from the conference due to US pressure. Even in normal times, the US complains about a lot of stuff. What is the Carney government’s threshold for deciding when to appease Trump? After almost two years, and contra the speeches, it seems to be very low.
