Community health centers served 32.7 million patients in 2025, with 9 in 10 patients living in low-income households. Medicaid was the largest payer, covering nearly half of health center patients and accounting for 46% of total health center revenue. on.kff.org/3ZdWYfG
The KFF bar chart titled "Health Centers Saw Increases in Patients Across Age Groups Since 2021" displays the number of patients in millions for the years 2021 to 2025. Each year is divided into three age groups: 0-17, 18-64, and 65 and older. The total patients increase each year, with 2021 showing 30.3 million, and 2025 showing 32.7 million.

AI is already helping manage scheduling, billing, documentation, & other hospital functions. The question is no longer whether health systems will use AI — it’s whether they’re prepared when something goes wrong. Hear more from Chip Kahn & Stephen Klasko in this episode: on.kff.org/4AxOCkl
Image of Stephen Klasko, CEO of the Health Assurance Foundation, speaking at an event. Overlaid is a quote from his appearance on the KFF Business of Health Podcast with Chip Khanh. It says: “I don’t think [Americans] want their hospitals to make AI safe for humanity. They just want AI and humans and health systems and insurers to work with AI to help fix our broken, fragmented, expensive and inequitable healthcare system, which, frankly, is on us.”
