Harper worked on the Underground Railroad and used the proceeds from her books and lecture tours to help fund its operations. When the Civil War was over and slavery abolished, she shifted her focus to the suffrage movement, refusing to compromise the Black vote for white women’s suffrage. /9
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper in 1893. In May 1866, Harper attended the National Woman’s Rights Convention in New York City. Taking the stage as a self-described “novice” to the movement, she delivered her famous “We Are All Bound Up Together” speech. She told the crowd, “You white women speak here of rights. I speak of wrongs,” reminding them that a Black woman’s fight for the vote could never be separated from the fight against racial terror. Her entry into the suffrage movement immediately forced her to pick a side in one of the most bitter schisms in American history. White women suffragists opposed the 15th Amendment, arguing that they should get the vote before uneducated Black men. While Harper desperately wanted the vote for women, she recognized that for Black men in the violent post-war South, the vote was a matter of life and death. She stated she would not put a single straw in the way of Black men securing safety. Photo credit: Internet Archive Book Images.

Harper’s final decade was marked by grief over the loss of her daughter and anguish over the rise of Jim Crow. Her health began to decline. She died on Feb. 22, 1911, at age 85. She was buried in historic Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Penn., fulfilling her vow to be buried “in a free land.” /end
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper in 1902. After Harper’s husband died in 1864, her daughter Mary became her constant anchor. Mary never married. Instead, she chose to live with her mother, traveling alongside her as a fellow lecturer, Sunday school teacher and social worker. Mary’s sudden death in 1909 left the aging Harper devastated and isolated during the final two years of her life. Harper’s own health rapidly plummeted, as her resilience was severely tested by profound grief. Harper’s later years were also heavy with the weight of political betrayal. In the 1890s and 1900s, she watched the American South implement legal segregation, sharecropping traps and poll taxes. She was horrified by the epidemic of racial lynchings sweeping the nation. She became consumed by an urgent, exhausting battle to stop the violence alongside her mentee, Ida B. Wells. Photo by J.W. Gibson. Photo credit: New York Public Library’s Digital Library.

#ResistanceRoots Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was born on this day in 1825 in Baltimore, Md. She was an abolitionist, suffragist, orator and one of the first Black women to be published in the U.S. She had remarkable opportunities that she used to lift others rather than for personal privilege. /1
Frances Ellen Watkins Harper in 1893, a photo that appeared in L.A. Scruggs’ book Women of Distinction: Remarkable in Works and Invincible in Character, published that same year. Harper stands as one of the most prolific, versatile and influential architects of American social reform. A century before the term “intersectionality” existed, she championed the idea that human rights are indivisible. As a lecturer, she helped galvanize public opinion against slavery and demand that newly emancipated people be guaranteed voting rights. As a gifted writer, she weaponized fiction and poetry to humanize the enslaved and combat patriarchy. Through her journalism, she challenged white supremacist violence, demanded that political leadership be held accountable and mobilized the Black community. Ultimately, Harper dedicated every gift she possessed — her voice, her pen, her education and her income — to the collective uplift of her people.

#ResistanceRoots Mary Hunter Austin was born on this day in 1868 in Carlinville, Ill. She was a writer, feminist, environmental conservationist and champion of Indigenous rights. Her life was shaped by the high desert landscapes she loved and battles over our most precious resource: water. /1
Mary Hunter Austin, by Charles F. Lummis, ca. 1900. Austin’s early writing is celebrated for its rich, mystical prose documenting the flora, fauna and Indigenous people of the high desert. Her environmental activism and Indigenous rights advocacy were driven by a mix of personal isolation, a lifelong rebellion against social conformity, and deep immersion in the landscapes and cultures of the American West. Rather than viewing issues in isolation, she developed a unified philosophy that rejected human dominance over both nature and women. Today, she is recognized as a pioneer of ecofeminism, nearly a century ahead of her time. Her later work explores how the exploitation of nature and the marginalization of women are rooted in the same societal power structures.
