I’m so glad I saved a few sunflower seeds from the birds so that I could bring them inside to give to the mafia mice.
Some small sunflower heads partiall ravished by mice on a piece of plywood.

Wednesday El Niño update - The explanation for why SSTs are still at record high levels in the Niño 3.4 region is because of both climate change + El Niño. Far-reaching ENSO teleconnections are more dependent on temperature gradients, & relative SSTs are actually more similar to other strong events.
Line graph time series of daily sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region. Years are shown from 1982 to 2025 in shades of blue to light yellow, and 2026 is shown in red. Climatologically, the largest anomalies are during the boreal winter in terms of magnitude. Data is from OISSTv2.1. Map of September 28, 2026 average sea surface temperature anomalies in the ENSO monitoring regions. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1 with anomalies relative to a 1991-2020 baseline.Graphic showing the 2-week change in sea surface temperature anomalies across the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean from September 14, 2026 to September 28, 2026. How are you using your Sunchoke biomass (composting forum at permies)
I've had issues with sunchokes spreading when using the biomass as mulch. I'm thinking about burning it and using the ash somewhere on the property.

Breaking News! The preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly for Sept. 29th came in at 3.18°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. This marks yet another record all-time high and the 123rd consecutive record daily high at 1.1°C above the previous daily record set in 1997.

Our young horse chestnut even had a few nuts. I got to them before the squirrels. The oak to the left is incredibly aggressive; over growing this tree and crowded out and killed 3 spruce in its path.🪾💪
14 shiny horse chestnuts around a US quarter for scale. Most about that or larger. A young horse chestnut in autumn hues: reds, orange, yellows and greens.

It’s astonishing how far ahead the 2026 El Niño is. The red line is 2026. The other warmest El Niños are the colored lines. It’s not even playing in the same league. Some of this is of course due to this natural El Niño cycle on top of long-term ocean warming… 1/

Lots of firsts this year. This Cornelian Cherry is 8 years old. It’s been drought and I’ve only watered sparingly. First cherries yay! But they have to turn almost purple ripe or they are wicked sour.
My outstretched hand holding a few Cornelian Cherries in front of the young tree. She’s showing her autumn colors but burned by drought.

If the world adopted a plant-based diet, we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectares
We could reduce the amount of land used for grazing and croplands used to grow animal feed.
