Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Does anybody out there know about 1920s US passports? I've notice the 1921 passport application of the woman I've been researching has what looks like "justice" "clear" and the initials JCB written on it. I haven't seen this on any other passports I've looked at including her husband's. 121

Burning the Trump administration's plans for the Park would be a fitting protest today, but impossible - since they've had the Park completely closed off for the last six months. 11611
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 15/07/2026I honestly thought this was a nice historic marker at first glance. Rose Winslow wasn’t force fed in prison so you could bet on dumb shit. 021

Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 11/06/2026In 1917 the National Woman’s Party paid the expenses of at least some of their White House pickets. Rose Winslow had her travel and food expenses paid. The NWP also paid her medical expenses while she recovered from her hunger strike. 010

Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 30/05/2026A few more thoughts on Iron Jawed Angels. I like that we see Ruza working in a factory, although she worked in a hosiery factory not a garment factory. She would have worked with knitting machines not sewing machines. The movie reuses the sewing machines in the prison scenes, a budget issue, I bet. 120
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 30/05/2026Ok I’m finally watching Iron Jawed Angels! 120
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026The main thing that bugs me a bit about Suffs portrayal of Ruza Wenclawska is that she didn't pal around at NWP headquarters with Alice and the gang. She was a working woman who lived in New York and had to earn her own living. I know for dramatic purposes they have to be together. #hatm 170
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026If anyone needs more Ruza content, I post a lot more about Ruza and suffrage on Instagram. There is also a great Instagram account about Ruza called RememberingRuza. #hatm 031

Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza also wrote poetry! Almost all of her poems were published in The Masses, the socialist magazine published in Greenwich Village by Max Eastman. Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza appears in this clip from the Women's Political Union suffrage film "80 Million Women Want." She is sitting in the back of the car on the left and you can see her briefly at the end. She rubs her nose! I think the woman speaking at the beginning is Helen Todd. #hatm 1131
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Here are a few more photos of Ruza Wenclawska/Rose Winslow! I just found this arty one in the Doris Stevens papers. #hatm 1181
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza really did act on Broadway! Here she's listed in the playbill for Fashion at the Cort Theater in 1924. She also appeared in Redemption and the premier of Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms. #hatm 1102
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza was not actually in Tennessee for the ratification. In fact she stopped speaking in 1918 and does not seem to have been involved with suffrage after that, or at least nothing that got her name in the newspaper. #hatm 040
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026I really enjoyed seeing this recording even though I saw it multiple times in person. You can really see the costumes and details. Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026The NWP worried about Ruza's health in prison. In this letter Lucy asks Doris to get Ruza's doctor to contact the prison doctor. Dr. Rogers' wife Elizabeth Rogers was also a suffragist. #hatm 283
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza picketed the White House probably 4 times until she was arrested twice on October 6th and 15th. She was sentenced to 6 months in the District Jail plus 30 days extra because she was rearrested after the first arrest. #hatm 030
Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza was also a speaker on the 1916 campaign against Wilson in the western states. She spoke in Colorado and Arizona, taking over Inez's stops in Arizona. Ruza was also quite ill on the tour and had to take two weeks bed rest in Colorado. #hatm 171

Janet Lindenmuth @janetlindenmuth.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Ruza was not actually recruited to suffrage by Alice Paul. She worked first for Harriot Stanton Blatch's Womens Political Union in New York. Ruza was an organizer for the 1913 New York garment workers strike. The WPU volunteered to picket and donated food to the strikers. #hatm 1102
