This is the last month to catch Carole A Feuerman's public art installation, "Monuments of Stillness," before it leaves Chicago. Here are 4 of the 10 sculptures scattered along the Mag Mile.
Color photo of Monumental Quan, an extremely realistic sculpture of a white woman in a pink swimsuit and gold swim cap perched atop a reflective fuchsia sphere. She balances on her hands and knees, her back slightly arched and legs bent upwards behind her. She faces the sphere, her eyes closed and expression tranquil in this busy downtown setting. Color photo of Bibi on the Ball, a life size bronze sculpture of a woman in a black two piece swimsuit sitting atop of a reflective sphere, her legs crossed at the knee and face tilted up towards the sun. Color photo of Justice, a life size bronze sculpture of a woman in a bikini and swim cap sitting in a meditative position atop a large sphere that reflects passersby and the streetscape. Color photo of The Golden Mean, a life size bronze sculpture of a male figure wearing a shiny gold swim cap. He balances on his hands, his body perfectly arching into the air in an elegant handstand.

Full poem:
Good Bones

BY MAGGIE SMITH

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.

The Shitbird by Spencer Fleury, published by @stanchion.bsky.social, is a riot. A wonderful read. Funny, fun, disconcerting, swerving between having you kind of enraged at the people the main character is dealing with and kind of enraged at the main character. He's just such a disaster. 💙📚
stanchionzine.com
The Shitbird | Stanchion
The Shitbird is the story of Colin McAllister, a seaman in the US Coast Guard, and a poor fit for the role at best. He’s an outsider, a stoner with a bad attitude and a smart mouth, a combo that often puts him on the wrong side of an ass-kicking. He only joined up because he was fresh out of options when he was expelled after a college party turned into a case of suspected arson. And when he finds the dead body of well-liked shipmate Fred Sobel on the far side of a minuscule Caribbean Island during a routine afternoon of R&R, his life immediately takes a turn for the worse. His shipmates—most of them, anyway—jump to the conclusion that he must be responsible. They want to take justice into their own hands and throw McAllister overboard in the dead of night, but the intervention of Fred’s closest friend—the popular Wade Lucas—keeps them at bay. Until, that is, McAllister's nemesis Dennis Hebert starts planting doubt in Lucas's mind. As Lucas’s allegiance wavers and tensions with the rest of the crew escalate, McAllister quickly finds himself in a very dark place. Once sure of his own innocence, now he's not so certain. If he's not careful, he'll end up just like Fred—and maybe bring the whole crew down with him.   283 pages Paperback Published on September 15, 2026 ISBN: 979-8-90214-223-2   About Spencer Fleury Spencer Fleury is the author of I Blame Myself But Also You and other stories (Malarkey Books, 2024) and How I’m Spending My Afterlife (Woodhall Press, 2021). He lives in San Francisco and Portugal.   Praise for The Shitbird   “FUN AS HELL!” - Joshua Mohr, author of Saint the Terrifying   "In The Shitbird, Seaman McAllister doesn't know if he's more afraid to live or die, but either way, he's taking you with him. This book will suck you into its darkness and challenge everything you think you understand about the human condition. It is a thrilling exploration of a breaking (or perhaps broken?) psyche both reaching for and fighting against its own salvation."- Stephanie Austin, author of Burn   "A body is found on a beach and what unfolds from there is part Chandleresque noir, part stoner existential comedy, and it's all good stuff. Spencer Fleury handles death on the high seas like no other. The Shitbird is funny, brutal, bittersweet. Take this ride." - Adam Van Winkle, author of Count the Dust, editor-in-chief at Cowboy Jamboree Press   "The Shitbird finds all the joy in making wrong decisions, over and over and over again." - Aaron Burch, author of Tacoma

Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

“Golden retriever brings toys to the intruder who breaks into his house.”
—The Associated Press

Not quite as brave as Balto
Nor noble as Roselle
Who did her duty faithfully
While walls around her fell

Not stalwart as old Stubby
Who served out in the trench
But thief and flatfoot both agree
This mutt is quite a mensch

Mike Johnson is speaking for his party: GOP does not support regulation (unless he or his members can make money from it). Regulation plus money to Johnson and the GOP members = cost of doing business. He is being very plain here. You may not agree, but he is being honest.
