"So in summary: using AI for coding led to depression, apathy, existential dread, and worse software. Not good. Add on top of that the negative environmental, community, and economic impacts of AI, and it became extremely apparent to me that something's gotta change." brettcodes.com/im-done-usin...

I'm done using AI
Why I'm stopping using AI for coding (and anything else) after using it earnestly for a year and coming to understand the harms it causes on personal, societal, and environmental levels.

If I had a dollar for every ex Blizzard employee who is a big asshole I've heard of "making" a game with public support for around a decade then I'd have two dollars. Not much but weird it happened twice.

No no, I won't opt out, all my code on GitHub is very bad AI will learn to write the worst code humanity has seen I encourage everyone to flood it with even more bad code, even better if it's commented as being amazing etc. Apparently it's enough to have a few hundred bad samples to poison AI

Its all about "free markets" and "let the market decide" until you have competition that shows how full of shit you are and then you run to daddy US government begging to stop these "bad" Chinese models from entering the market.

I think this is a big gap in software design culture. There's lots of commentary on visual design and micro-interaction, but remarkably little explicating conceptual and structural design. This section from Magic Ink is lodged in my mind. buff.ly/Bl9JwTv

Had a webserver getting crushed by Claude for some reason. Dug in to the logs and someone made a shitty php hangman game back in 2008, the dipshit computers found it, and were “playing” it 1M+ times a day until I blocked it. The future sucks ass

Also go outside art too! Philosophy, physics, math and all other domains will give you new perspectives and sources of inspiration. And try reading genres you hate too, for analysis and maybe finding something you will like.

How useful something is isn't a carte blanche on its ethical status or general social acceptability... doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Of note, this argument does not claim that LLMs are
useless.‡ Dismissing systems that are already reshaping how
knowledge is produced and labor is organized is neither
analytically adequate nor strategically coherent. What it
claims is narrower and perhaps more durable that the
†Contemporary AI models inherit from connectionism both its successes
and its discontents, including the characteristic temptation to treat pattern-
matching as cognition and statistical regularity as understanding. Escaping it
requires not better models but better meta-theory (Guest & Martin, 2025a).
‡Besides, usefulness is not a hallmark of ethical or desirable systems uniquely.
Indentured laborers are ‘useful’ to those who steal their labor, indubitably so.
The same for child laborers. Stealing is ‘useful’ to thieves.

$80 billion spent pursuing imaginary growth with headline-grabbers instead of investing in homegrown talent and fresh IPs that could've kept that portfolio fresh for a small fraction... Mind-blowing. Ironically not unlike Sony. Why foster what's there when you could chase a high you'll never reach?

But then if someone uses that idea you can still use it. It's not like the ideas are one use. Even better, most great games are usually a blend of other games and some unique stuff sprinkled on top.

See, the point of the Reddit post is that there is onboarding in the game, there are explanations and quests. But Steve didn't engage with those until someone showed it to him. If he'd read all the visible text or even just randomly tried things he would discover all that. Somehow he didn't.

Yes and no. I've thought the same until I realized this defends the immoral ones. If you lie to a liar to screw them over it's good. If a company is firing good people right before Christmas then why should I be moral towards it? I want to be moral, but sometimes the right thing is to not be.

To be fair, if you work for a soulless corporation maybe it's better if you give work to AI. You'll make the bubble pop faster and increase costs

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

Reminder: perhaps the easiest & cheapest way to tell Bezos to fuck off is by linking to Bookshop or (even better) an indie bookstore WHENEVER you talk about a book online. W/o a link people will just google it & that will lead to Amazon. W a link you can send a sale to a good business

And on steam there are like 100k+ games, and you can definitely get many great games very cheaply. Or even for free!

Taking into account all the sales on the steam store the steam machine is much cheaper because games aren't expensive as hell. Ps5 games are expensive even on sale. Also a much bigger pool of games on steam.

IMO it's not that bad, remember that whoever is interested in it probably already has some games in the library and if not then steam has great sales all the time. And games for consoles are hella pricey. Not to mention almost all steam games work offline, and it's a PC not just a gaming machine.

I think people build in house engines all the time, but they just aren't visible. It is a big time investment, but like always the maintenance is the main cost long-term. And I think maintenance could be much easier. See as example UnisonLang and imagine the same for all software. And games!

Another thing is that AI can help with writing code, but not logic and not maintenance. AI favors writing a lot of code when small amount would be enough. Using it well for writing software long term is a skill in itself. Skill that many devs lack even without AI use.

Jacek Andrzejewski @jandrzejewski.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
IMO feel free to use AI, but on your own terms. Set up small local model and use it. If you use AI like Claude or ChatGPT you can be cut off at any point, you might lose account, they might increase price, or just lose data. And they take your data to train it more. Use local AI.

AI by itself is not evil. Like cars are not. We hate that all those companies are getting richer while also lying about being able to replace workers (and employers believe that). That suddenly everyone pushes AI to be a part of features even if it makes everything far worse and more expensive.
