Wow, we have a LOT of endorsed candidates this year! 35 to be exact, plus 2 initiative campaigns: @no645.bsky.social & @nohateinwastate.bsky.social That number is high because there are so many races this year where we can flip a GOP seat blue or replace a conservative dem with a progressive!

I see this among lawyers, even. Younger but still seasoned litigators who can’t negotiate with irrational but perfectly predictable actors, or transactional folks who can’t infer their negotiating position from context.

It’s not just an inability to draw an inference or read between the lines. I think people are losing the ability to think critically and entertain a hypothetical. Along with that, the ability to empathize, or to understand and anticipate someone else’s behavior.

Not that I’m a fan personally of algorithmic pricing, but has nobody heard of a trade secret? Patents are a disclosure and a patent case in this field is a public slap-fight over who was more exploitative first.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The surge in patent applications for surveillance pricing technology makes me wonder - in what market do companies think they are going to enforce patent rights to techniques that are so incredibly unpopular without costing themselves more in customer loss and goodwill than they can gain?

It’s not the worst revelation by a mile but it hits hard for me to read that the head legal partner to HR was himself an office predator. I also can’t get over the brutal executive turf wars, management and office politics that seem to override the whole point of being there.

I picked up “Careless People” and the new “Don’t Be Evil” at airports and I’m in the middle of an absolute binge. In the latter and can’t put it down. There’s a generation of literature from survivors of big tech, especially women, coming out now. Each story is unique but similar and horrifying.

Because if you can’t win elections by making life better for your constituents, (as Democrats, especially progressives Democrats do,) then your recourse is only to make the good-doers into the scapegoats for every possible source of discontent.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
There was a very real and very documented effort by the far-right to encapsulate all of Democrats’ awareness of and efforts against systemic injustice, scientific illiteracy, and abuse as “Woke” and to make it a pejorative for no other reason than to sabotage progressive politics.

They’re nitrogen fixers and they’re prolific. Probably better than potatoes. You can grow them in hydroponics with a non-soil substrate. And they look weird as hell.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
You need almost a foot of depth, loose soil, and good drainage. Moderate water, couple inches a week. Space apart, not as important. But they take a while. Best to start early in the year.

The folks there now, with what appears to be their complete lack of editorial freedom from ownership, are too nose-blind to smell bullshit or to ask a hard question of their ordained candidate(s). The Stranger was already dead to me for their union-busting layoff but now they’re useless too.

Rich and Will knew how to interview, how to run endorsements, and would confront and ask tough questions of candidates reflecting research and understanding. Bias shmias, they were after blood and truth and they got yelled at and did it anyway.

I read the whole thing and came back up to comment. You’re right. Ashley and Hannah know how to do investigative journalism. They (used to, presumably still do) annoy the fuck out of officials by digging and using the sunshine law and not taking anything at face value.

I don’t see a fundamental shift since I was prosecuting ML cases ten years ago, and the fundamental disconnect is the same as so many of the invalid early computer patents. Applying a black box to a conventional problem isn’t patent eligible subject-matter whether it’s AI or a processor generally.

The sole recourse if you think a sign isn’t legal (unless it’s on or abutting your own property) is to report it to local code enforcement. The removal of signage in a yard or public right of way is a misdemeanor, whether you think it’s legally placed or not, under either RCW 29a.84.040 or theft 3.
010
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
LOL. You seem real unsure whether your gal did the crime, but committed to not caring either way. Looks like everyone but Pollet misjudged the 46th. Dreher won’t pick up any of Davis’ support, so this election is as good as over.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Every sign represents a person or household who support a candidate. Every sign stolen represents a person or household who feels aggrieved and motivated to vote for that candidate and talk about it. This is why stealing signs, or being flippant about sign theft, is just foot-shooty stupid.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Campaign signage is a very modest part of campaign spending - again, signs don't vote - but candidates with any level of experience at all treat their opponent's signage with respect. Again, estimated 100 to 200 yard signs stolen from people's homes? Christ...
100
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Supporters - VOTERS - buy signs to support candidates, and they place signs on their property to show support and start a conversation with their neighbors. Voters. Voters are the victims of this mass sign-theft.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Dreher's denial is the worst denial I've heard all year. "Oh they were probably placed illegally, so they were litter." No way in hell. Hundreds of signs. Campaigns don't place hundreds of signs AT ALL, much less on public thoroughfares. Why not? Because signs don't vote.
110
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
OK I've read deeper into Dreher Campaign Stealing Signs-Gate and I'm even more disappointed. What a stupid, stupid thing to do. First up, does anyone believe that Dreher's campaign staff didn't steal these signs? Hundreds of them? Allegedly on film and reported to the police and PDC?
131
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
And a yard sign isn't litter in a yard. Campaigns might distribute a few to public thoroughfares, but track them and take them down. Yard signs distributed to supporters go in their yards, where taking them is trespass and theft. "Caught on camera" sounds to me like someone's doorbell cameras.
010
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Sign theft is petty and unlawful. I don't know if I believe Dreher's denial, but the only appropriate response is to *urge your supporters not to steal signs.* Vote Ron Davis. He doesn't steal yard signs.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
A conservative, Dreher does not appear to be, but it's hard to tell if he stands for anything at all. He's not poised to inspire either Democrats or Republicans. You should see how unpopular he is on the cesspool that is Twitter/X, purely for having prosecuted some Jan 6 perps.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Now that he's suing Apple, he has tens of thousands of dollars of support for his campaign in his newly adopted city and state from the employees of the companies that compete directly with Apple's AI aspirations.
120
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Dreher is accusing Davis of painting him as a conservative. That's dumb, and he hasn't. Davis has correctly painted Dreher as an opportunist, which I think he is. He lacked the courage to oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation and joined the Trump DOJ in 2019.
110
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Critical vs. malicious campaigning: Davis has correctly pointed out hypocrisy in Dreher's past and current claims. Dreher has spread disinformation about Davis. Dreher started by confusing Ron Davis with an unrelated Ron Davis from Texas.
110
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
As a practitioner who worked on practical generative AI and machine learning issues in-house for half a decade, I am about 100x more qualified than Dreher to regulate AI, as are many of my former colleagues. And I would delegate that to literally anyone BUT Dreher. Ron would be fantastic.
140
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
As best I can determine from my research, Dreher's sole claim to be qualified for AI regulation is that he was just assigned to co-first chair an AI lawsuit against Apple. The case is on a multi-year schedule. The deadline to amend pleadings doesn't even end until November.
120
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Dreher campaigns heavily on AI and fear, casting himself as the candidate to regulate the industry. This is wrong. Both have Harvard JD's and BA's. Ron has an entire extra MS and a professional history in tech as an entrepreneur, founder and CEO. Ron's much better qualified to regulate AI.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Every progressive publication and podcast in Seattle tagged Ron Davis as the qualified standard-bearer for progressive change and accountability in Washington. The Stranger, which termed its good people after acquisition, is banished from the list of reliable or progressive publications.
130
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I posted months ago about Dreher's surging out-of-state fundraising from AI company employees in California and lawyers from back East. (And minimal WA state fundraising.) Others have followed up and calculate that his WA state donor list would only account for about a quarter of his bank.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Vote today, Seattle. The race I'm watching most closely is @ronpdavis.bsky.social in the 46th LD. Vote for Ron Davis, please. This was going to be progressive Davis vs. establishment Pollet, which was already important, but it got more crucial with the surprise entry of the opportunist Dreher.

83% of Will Dreher's campaign money is from out of state, much of it from employees of OpenAI & Anthropic, & he has a grand total of *20 donors* in his district. Totally normal, not at all sus, I'm sure it's fine. But you might wanna go ahead and choose @ronpdavis.bsky.social for the 46th LD anyways
WILL DREHER: My opponent is running a nasty smear campaign
SOME GUY: Wow, what’s he saying?
DREHER: That I signed a letter endorsing Brett Kavanaugh's nomination, and that I'm bankrolled by AI money
GUY: ...and? Is it true?
DREHER: Well now see but you have to understand the context
GUY: Hm

If I were in his campaign, I’d be furious with him for just not taking this race seriously. Money matters, but if he’s relying on bankroll and other people to make the case for him, he’ll lose whether he raises 2x or 4x. Seattle voters are sophisticated.
120
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
That’s another thing that bothers me. I don’t see a bona fide campaign. He’s taken a lot of money from a lot of Californians, and at least right now I see less than a biweekly presence here, not much canvassing, and no effective advocacy for either the AI topic or *everything else*.
130
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
*obviously, I don’t think he intends to treat representing constituents as his primary gig at all. Suing Apple is gonna be way more lucrative for him and at some point it should occupy all of his time. And I still wonder what’s in it for his Anthropic friends to have donated his campaign war chest.
151
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
As far as I can tell, Dreher’s credentials to understand the use, impact, and dangers of AI are tied to his preparation to argue one lawsuit, which I don’t know how he can do if he somehow became a representative*, and the friends he made with a company that competes with the target of his lawsuit.

Jams @jams.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Between two Harvard JD’s, if you want one to regulate AI, I prefer the one with deeper technical background, an entire extra degree, actual nonlitigation business and tech experience, and you know, a track record working for the community.
152
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
First, this is a thread worth reading, and I agree. Second, I want to point out that Dreher’s supposed strength, “AI regulation,” is really Ron Davis’s. If you want a lawyer-technologist who advocates for the humans, Ron has the superior academic, professional, and political qualifications.

I had this come up from a student, and it’s like, I could talk about what comes up and how to be efficient for this business if you want to be the one redlining the deals that need it, or we could talk about how that turns into running a hundred a week and how to make that somehow not impossible.
000
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
I don’t think it would be hard to frame a series of overturned cases as a correction and reversion to stare decisis. The irony will be the liberal legal establishment dismantling the conservative one using philosophically conservative concepts.
020
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
But I would also say that conservatism is a meaningless political container, because no conservative principle is ever applied by its adherents when it would run contrary to the interests of someone with economic or right-wing power.
000
Jams @jams.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
In fairness, Trump’s only political affiliation is to himself, and the only principle he adheres to is self-interest. I wouldn’t call him conservative at all.
