at some point I got randomly fascinated by Bob Hope’s awful 1960s/1970s movies and got whatever copies were available (CANCEL MY RESERVATION was sadly still just on VHS). Anyway the DVD of this one is closest at hand to pick up and threaten my man with to be funny, and I do it regularly

There’s a nice unsettling atmosphere in the wrongness of the place, and the things in it that are not really people. The rules for leaving are easy to learn and hard to master as they say. How the place came to be and who put up the signs is not answered by the ending, but it allows some guesses

At various times we follow him, another man, and a little boy who’s more observant than both of them as they walk the hallways and attempt to find the last one, and once the place starts playing with their personal memories it really does pay off as a story

Tonight’s horror watch (we’re one behind) is EXIT 8, a liminal spaces type of horror film from Japan that adapts a video game—pretty literally I assume, as it drops characters into an atmosphere-drenched place with rules and an objective
