I should be sleeping right now, ready for an early start to get to Stroud to set up for livestreaming this event... ...but instead I'm wondering whether the spacing on my pegboard should be Blocktober-fest or Block-toberfest? Anyway, hopefully live before 10:30am! twitch.tv/jamienemeth #Teletext

On its way now to teletext recovery hero @jamienemeth.bsky.social - 60 tapes carefully selected from the Mountain. Each has been checked: if their labels are right, there’s a missing edition of Digi on each one. That’s 2% of all broadcast Digi in that box. There’s more ready to go if you want a box

It's taken a while for the massive speed boost of full fibre to smack me in the face. For most websites, hardly noticed the difference. Video uploads though...🚅💨 Took me going "wait, where's my video gone?!" a few times, as I didn't actually see it uploading, for me to twig that it already had 🤣

I'm not from Stroud, I'm from (near) Swansea 😝 But if all goes to plan, I'll be in Stroud on Saturday. We're all meeting up again for teletext shenanigans. And if all goes even more to plan, you'll be able to watch the livestream even if you're not in Stroud, including but not limited to Norfolk 😊

Today is new fibre install day, so I'm about to lose the VDSL connection. I discovered you can buy ethernet to VDSL converters. I could theoretically simulate my own VDSL broadband service, connect my old router to it via a phone cable, and make the light go blue again. *gets viscerally excited*

Oh no, what happened? 😂 It would have been fun to do my own livestream, if I'd had the time or energy. My house ended up weirdly perfectly placed to cover the whole thing, albeit with basic and strictly amateur kit.

Is it a great timelapse? No. Is it perfectly tracked? No. Is it exactly time-aligned? No. But it's mine. From my front doorstep. Some said "I got nothing by me"...well...physics don't work like that...I can only assume you went back indoors before the maximum... #SolarEclipse #Eclipse #Eclipse2026

Each photo in this montage is two minutes apart. It was like an extra sunset, and yet some people are posting online that they "got nothing" where they lived...even though they were in the same partial eclipse path, with the same moon, same sun, and same sky? 🤔 #SolarEclipse #Eclipse #Eclipse2026

Wasn't great footage, but it was a great memory. I glanced at the camcorder occasionally and moved it manually, but concentrated on enjoying the eclipse with my own eyes, with family and neighbours. Not trying to compete with far better photographers/equipment. #SolarEclipse #Eclipse #Eclipse2026

Brought this camcorder out of retirement for the solar eclipse. Last used in 2015. Still had three-quarters battery when I stopped. Impressed it held a charge at all, after all this time. It's only SD, but it's got a great zoom lens, probably the best I own. #SolarEclipse #Eclipse #Eclipse2026

I posted in our local Facebook group about today's eclipse. Pretty uncontroversial stuff: don't look at the sun except with certified eclipse glasses, here's how to make a pinhole projector. Someone commented "nanny state"... Listen, it's not illegal to look directly at the sun. It's just stupid.

I'm excited, sure, but it'll be about 93% in Swansea again this time, too?! I'd understand Spain forgetting about 2015, as this time the path of totality goes right through the middle, and you can't get better than that...but from a UK perspective, it's about the same as 2015, no?

Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I've seen a few posts getting excited about the upcoming solar eclipse, and referring to the last one being 1999, or that this will be the best one since 1999... ...has everyone collectively forgotten that 2015 happened, where we had 93% totality in Swansea, and clear skies?!

For now, I just wanted something cheap to prove the concept, so I found this second-hand CF card on eBay, but I'm conscious that this means it already had some wear. I bought a high endurance SD card for my Raspberry Pi server fairly recently after the original conked out, though it managed a year.
110
Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yes, I'd read that CF was passive, but the penny hadn't quite dropped that this must mean it's natively IDE, by definition. I guess that explains why there's so many pins on a CF card/slot! It's something I'd always wondered, and started wondering about again recently.
130
Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
CF seems to be the way to go if you can, from own experience and forums. I'm sure the SD adapter will work in something else, possibly something newer and more easily fooled...many PCs have tens if not hundreds of hard drive configurations they'd accept, but this ThinkPad has about four, total.
120
Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
I knew of the concept years ago, when I was researching replacing my dead iPod hard drive (though that was CF to ZIF), which I never actually got round to doing. Finding a sensibly-priced replacement mechanical HDD of the right size is a struggle to say the least, so these adapters are fab!

A friend donated this IBM ThinkPad 365X to me, saying "I knew you'd know what to do with it!" I tried an SD to IDE adapter, but that was a no-go. The laptop could see some files, but trying to access them made half disappear. Very odd. The CF to IDE adapter, though? Proof is in the pudding!

Not the first time I've connected an old PC to my own dialup ISP, but the first time the PC and ISP haven't been in the same room, let alone on the same table! The theoretical maximum speed is 33.6 kbps (two modems alone can't hit 56k something something), so 26.4 to the attic and back ain't bad!
Photo of an LCD display of a laptop running Windows 98, showing a dialup connection status window above a file explorer window. There is a dialup connection icon (an old-style corded telephone connected to two PCs). The dialup connection title bar says 'Connected to Nemnet', and the window says: Connected at 26,400 bps, Duration: 8 minutes 23 seconds, Bytes received: 41,202, Bytes sent: 10,043. The window also has OK, Disconnect, and Details buttons.

The awkward moment when you realise you have zero PCs with known working floppy disk drives, except for the laptop with a FDD in unknown condition that you need to make the floppy disk for 🤣 I did dig out my known working FDD to use on the testbench PC, but there's no FDD port on the motherboard 🙃

Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
The point is: it's a testbench! I have things I want to test (USB modems, FireWire capture cards, TV capture cards) that are only compatible (at least on a software level) with Windows XP. So right now, I only need Windows XP. I can always repartition the drive later, or even wipe it entirely.
010
Jamie Nemeth @jamienemeth.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Only seven months after I put this testbench PC together, it finally has an operating system on it! 🫣 I've had plenty of other things going on, but I was also agonising about how to partition the drive to get the optimum multiboot scenario, and as a result, it was just sitting around doing nothing.
