I used to think "Let's double-click on that" (where "that" is a topic of discussion) was a cute little phrase, but these days I think it's just kinda weird. How often do you even double-click in a UI?

@alexanderadam Seems to be very much a US thing. A lot of sites claim to be doing it for age verification or prove you're not a bot or some other thing, but the companies doing the verification are third parties and I think they're doing it to collect data. This way, they know who I am, where I […]

@stroughtonsmith I have a beta invite for Forever but I haven't had a chance to log in since we're about to move to another state. If it brings back some of that old feeling, though, I might actually get back to playing more.

@stroughtonsmith Group finder is one thing I thought was amazing at the time, but it definitely ruined the community aspect of pugging. People used to have me on their friends lists specifically because I tanked a dungeon with them. After group finder it just became "gogogogo tank". They just […]

"Do you need supplemental coverage for things that aren't covered by your medical insurance?" Because medical situations not being covered by medical insurance is such a normal thing in the US that they're selling a la carte services to cover things like hospital stays.

Looking at health insurance in the US is so depressing. With the amount of upselling going on they're making it seem more like buying camping gear.

This kind of thing reminds me of when my previous employer went on a tear to save infra costs and made thousands of engineers slash their services' capacities with almost no additional guidance. My SRE team was inundated with the resulting deluge of incidents because, as it turned out, that […]

My company's 5-year-old main app has nearly doubled in size in 8 months because LLM-generated code is incredibly verbose. One service's DB is frequently a hair's breadth from complete saturation because the performance is never in their prompts. Their PRs frequently add validations and […]

Responding to tech recruiters with the same verbiage they use to reject candidates is quite satisfying.
An email to a tech recruiter. It reads:

Hi [recruiter name],

Thank you for the opportunity to meet with the team. Unfortunately, due to the number of interview processes I'm currently involved in, I need to narrow it down to companies that most closely match what I'm looking for, so I will not be moving forward with [company name]. Again, thank you for your time and I wish you luck in finding your next infrastructure engineer.

More fun with the code-review bot at work
Excerpt of a GitHub comment from me in response to a code review bot:

Back in the day, I had a dog named Peanut. When I would take him for a walk, he would alert on things like plastic shopping bags blowing in the wind in the distance — it was downtown Baltimore, so there was a lot of that. Then when we got closer, he would realize it wasn't another dog and would just go back to walking normally as if he hadn't just been absolutely losing his mind over it.

The issues this bot calls out as "critical" and "important" here are plastic bags blowing in the wind.

There've only been two recruiters recently that have pitched a role that's at all palatable. And it was the same role from both. It's wild out there.

Another recruiter, pitching an in-office role in midtown Manhattan that pays less than I'm making working from home in Ohio. Part of this interview process involves spending 4-6 hours on a take-home project. The audacity on display in my LinkedIn DMs is incredible.

@paco Having to pay for things you can't control has always been wild to me. It's like how, until recently (last year, I think?), AWS was billing for unauthenticated requests to S3 buckets. A CDN helps that, but even that's only a partial solution. DigitalOcean doesn't charge for DNS so if you […]

Met with my CTO and VP to discuss infrastructure costs. Our Kafka-based CDC infrastructure is costing more than our total combined infra was costing 6 months ago and over 20x what the data engineers planned for. I was pretty sure their estimate was low, but this even surprised me.

The test suite is all just barfed into one huge file and it's not easy to navigate. So when I got a couple PRs on it over the past few days, I was like …

The "Mr. Incredible" meme. The lefthand side shows Mr. Incredible looking happy and the caption is "Someone's using an OSS project I made". The righthand side shows Mr. Incredible looking dark and a lot less happy with the same caption.

It always reminds me of how I've worked on multiple engineering teams that chose things like Protobuf or whatever fastest serialization tooling they could find "for performance" while running 200+ SQL queries per request in the hot path. You're optimizing for the wrong damn thing.

Most engineering teams I've been on in the past 10 or so years have had a policy of "every change must come from a ticket". Invariably, what ends up happening is each dev just writes up tickets for what they want to work on and then works the tickets they wrote.

I'm only looking into this because I'm working on adding RESP3 support to my Redis client. And now I'm starting to think maybe I don't want to do that. In several cases, it changes how the commands work in a way that is less consistent than with RESP2. I don't understand why negotiating a new […]

I haven't been able to get it to produce a null in the array at all. If the JSONPath doesn't match anything, it returns an empty array. Also, a double is neither null nor an integer.
Screenshot from the Redis CLI.

One of my pet peeves about Redis is that the documentation is often aspirational. And by that I mean it would be great if it worked that way but it doesn't. For example, the `JSON.NUMINCRBY` command says it returns a string or an array containing ints/nulls […] [Original post on zomglol.wtf]

With .-based path argument: Bulk string reply representing the stringified new value, null reply if the matching value is not a number, or simple error reply on error.
