Looking at health insurance in the US is so depressing. With the amount of upselling going on they're making it seem more like buying camping gear.

It just occurred to me to check on how the OpenStreetMap project is handling the whole Lake Ontario naming debacle. Pretty well, it turns out. Recording all names of geographic features *somewhere* is something the project does. So they're going to put the bullshit name in there to satisfy that […]

Responding to tech recruiters with the same verbiage they use to reject candidates is quite satisfying.
An email to a tech recruiter. It reads:

Hi [recruiter name],

Thank you for the opportunity to meet with the team. Unfortunately, due to the number of interview processes I'm currently involved in, I need to narrow it down to companies that most closely match what I'm looking for, so I will not be moving forward with [company name]. Again, thank you for your time and I wish you luck in finding your next infrastructure engineer.

Just pulled off a fully online migration from Azure-managed Redis to a self-hosted Redis cluster during business hours on our highest-traffic service on a Friday with no noticeable impact on error rates. Please clap.

Met with my CTO and VP to discuss infrastructure costs. Our Kafka-based CDC infrastructure is costing more than our total combined infra was costing 6 months ago and over 20x what the data engineers planned for. I was pretty sure their estimate was low, but this even surprised me.

Most engineering teams I've been on in the past 10 or so years have had a policy of "every change must come from a ticket". Invariably, what ends up happening is each dev just writes up tickets for what they want to work on and then works the tickets they wrote.

We're writing to let you know that starting 10 December 2025,
Australian law will require that redditors in Australia must be 16
or older to create and use Reddit accounts.
Users confirmed to be under 16 will have their accounts
suspended under the new Australian minimum age law. While
we disagree with the Government's assessment of Reddit as
being within the scope of the law, we need to take steps to
comply. This means anyone in Australia with a Reddit account
confirmed to be under 16 will be blocked from accessing their
account or creating a new one. Note that as an open platform,
Reddit is still available to browse without an account.
If you have questions, please visit Reddit Help. To request a

I'm looking into slow page loads in the hot path in my company's core app. It makes generous use of caching but, for business reasons, they want fresh data. So the cache is invalidated several times per minute for something that takes 10 seconds to render.
