I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

@esqueer.net We’re not going to get to a sentient or conscious AI. Unfortunately, we may well get to a stage where people believe this, and accord it rights which then come into conflict with the rights of humans and animals. @astrokatie.com

Comedy might be a good way start to get to how AI is not thinking or responding in any way that resembles a human.

the recent jwst images have been insane
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust.

Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Processing: Alyssa Pagan.A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the center. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's center; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in color; bright, nearby stars are the same color.A star-forming region. The left two thirds of the image is blanketed in thick clouds of green and yellow gas and dust that form swirling patterns. Some of the gas is spread into thin, thready wisps. The right third of the image is the black background speckled with stars and multi-colored dots that represent distant galaxies. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the center of the scene. Each is crowned with six long spikes and two shorter spikes created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors.
A region of space filled with bright stars and clouds of gas. In the center, the densest clouds form the shape of a chest with its lid open. The chest appears to glow from within. At its base it breaks apart into long pillars of thick gas. Many of the gas clouds in the background are dark orange globules, while others form large, pale hazes. A few brightly shining stars lie in the foreground, the biggest and brightest in front of the chest’s lid.

Micheal Psellus’s daemons seem quite similar to the tulpa’s in Twin Peaks. (from Fairies: A History by @drfrancisyoung.bsky.social) cc. @markfrost.bsky.social
Text: Psellus was also one of the few Byzantine thinkers to engage with the folklore of his own time. He was aware of the belief of ordinary Greeks in
'the Fair One of the Mountains, a beautiful woman (or women) appearing in lonely and wild places, but he rejected the idea that she should be considered a demon. The Fair One of the Mountains was, rather, 'an affection of the head, produced from harsh vapours, or food digested with difficulty 49 - just as Jacob Marley was, according to Scrooge, an undigested piece of cheese. The Fair One of the Mountains was a matter for the physician rather than the metaphysician. But Psellus did not deny the existence of daemons, although he suggested that some daemons might be made by magicians, and that they were either inanimate or perhaps drew on the life of some human being, like an animated statue. On this reading, a daemon seems to be some sort of projection of the will of the magician as an apparent (but not really) separate being. At the time, Psellus's speculations were challenging to a prevailing consensus among churchmen that anything non-angelic was from the devil (as were even some angelic apparitions); while Psellus seems to us like a sceptic, the really shocking implication of his eccentric theories about daemons at the time was that not all apparitions were evil.

When Elizabeth Alker on Radio 3 said regular listeners would know she's a fan of the Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan, I assumed she meant the actual 1960s plans for Warrington and Runcorn, and I was very impressed. They're a band. (But I'm still impressed.)

Don’t invoke those who fought in world wars. They were fighting against people like you, and most of them wouldn’t like you. (Not you. I’m talking about a speech I had the misfortune to see on BBC News.)

Having worked at election counts, those 34 candidate ballot papers look very unwieldy. You can’t just flick through a set of 100 to check them, bound to slow things down. Could have attracted a lot of tourism, but not going to happen by the look of it.

Why do some people expect a respected scholar to just jettison their integrity and pretend there’s nothing to criticize in a major film version of their area of expertise? (It’s not about accuracy by the way.) Nolan will be fine. The rest of us have gotten a brilliant article out of it.

I think people are forgetting the council election results, which meant that Starmer had to go. I really wish Burnham well, not least because he’s from the same neck of the woods as me, similar background, age. He’s not the same as any other politician, but yeah there’s a lot to do.

Got hit in the head by a chaotic pendulum today, which was unexpected inside the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England. (Got a bit too close trying to get a good photo.)
Tight angle close up of the chaotic pendulum at St Mary Redcliffe, showing the chamber from which the water is poured into the hollow stainless steel crossbeam. View of the chaotic pendulum, showing the pendulum, the hollow crossbeam from which moves according to gravity and the distribution of water inside it, and the wooden cross-shaped structure to which they are attached. Stained glass window and church stone behind.

The BBC coverage of the Moon mission just asked how we get such crisp images from there. “There’s no WiFi in space.” And I thought, have you seen the photos from the Voyager missions. I know it’s just presentation, but have they heard of radio waves?

The Artemis II crew are saying the sight of the solar eclipse from behind the Moon is so incredible that they think humans might not have evolved to see it and they’re struggling to process what they’re seeing. (Unlike eclipses on Earth the Moon is much larger than the Sun from their perspective.)

My complaint to Bristol City Council about flags - it's the third time they'e gone up on my street. Not sure the solution to that, but I mentioned a street in Wigan that has council-installed flags above the shop fronts with other countries mixed in. Very different effect.
This concerns the St George flags on the lamp posts on West Street, Bedminster, which are still there after a month. I'm aware that it is the flag of England, and that this is England. I know it well enough not to need dozens of full size flags to remind me. More to the point, they weren't hoisted any government body, but a minority of self-appointed citizens. One gets the strong impression the majority don't want them there. It create discomfort, among other things. They aren’t designed to be welcoming to all citizens.

Cover of a Kindle edition of Ulysses which for some reason is classed under "science fiction/alternative history" on Amazon. Although this scene would have been science fiction at the time the book is set.
Photo on book cover shows a city scene with strange mix of vaguely old-looking "hats" produced by AI and modern-looking cars and vans, although the book is set in 1904.
