What do they mean “more common”. Did they just mean to say it was common?

I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

@esqueer.net We’re not going to get to a sentient or conscious AI. Unfortunately, we may well get to a stage where people believe this, and accord it rights which then come into conflict with the rights of humans and animals. @astrokatie.com

If you'd said you were sending money to the IRA, would a bank be able to assist you? Legally, the situation is equivalent.

Comedy might be a good way start to get to how AI is not thinking or responding in any way that resembles a human.

the recent jwst images have been insane
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust.

Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Processing: Alyssa Pagan.A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the center. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's center; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in color; bright, nearby stars are the same color.A star-forming region. The left two thirds of the image is blanketed in thick clouds of green and yellow gas and dust that form swirling patterns. Some of the gas is spread into thin, thready wisps. The right third of the image is the black background speckled with stars and multi-colored dots that represent distant galaxies. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the center of the scene. Each is crowned with six long spikes and two shorter spikes created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors.
A region of space filled with bright stars and clouds of gas. In the center, the densest clouds form the shape of a chest with its lid open. The chest appears to glow from within. At its base it breaks apart into long pillars of thick gas. Many of the gas clouds in the background are dark orange globules, while others form large, pale hazes. A few brightly shining stars lie in the foreground, the biggest and brightest in front of the chest’s lid.

People like that he often speaks what he’s thinking, but it’s something he needs to be pretty careful with.

It’s easily the biggest mis-step he’s made imo, forgetting he needs to be in PM mode now. You’re very right, not only will Manc do without that money, the govt *can’t* allow itself to be blackmailed.

Humanoids? Do you think lemurs are unconscious though? Consciousness goes way back in animals, unless you start tinkering with the definition… (which just leads to needing another word.)

Yes we can agree to disagree of course. I think it can “do” that consistent with what I’m saying.

It’s not thinking, except in the loose manner we keep applying human words to LLMs. There is no point where a consciousness would have to intervene.

The activity of learning patterns is trivially reducible to the algorithm, which it cannot depart from.

Micheal Psellus’s daemons seem quite similar to the tulpa’s in Twin Peaks. (from Fairies: A History by @drfrancisyoung.bsky.social) cc. @markfrost.bsky.social
Text: Psellus was also one of the few Byzantine thinkers to engage with the folklore of his own time. He was aware of the belief of ordinary Greeks in
'the Fair One of the Mountains, a beautiful woman (or women) appearing in lonely and wild places, but he rejected the idea that she should be considered a demon. The Fair One of the Mountains was, rather, 'an affection of the head, produced from harsh vapours, or food digested with difficulty 49 - just as Jacob Marley was, according to Scrooge, an undigested piece of cheese. The Fair One of the Mountains was a matter for the physician rather than the metaphysician. But Psellus did not deny the existence of daemons, although he suggested that some daemons might be made by magicians, and that they were either inanimate or perhaps drew on the life of some human being, like an animated statue. On this reading, a daemon seems to be some sort of projection of the will of the magician as an apparent (but not really) separate being. At the time, Psellus's speculations were challenging to a prevailing consensus among churchmen that anything non-angelic was from the devil (as were even some angelic apparitions); while Psellus seems to us like a sceptic, the really shocking implication of his eccentric theories about daemons at the time was that not all apparitions were evil.

The horrible thing is, since it can imitate human verbal responses (on the basis of masses of fed-into data, and without will or intention) there are people seriously arguing this, may be a push for AI rights, then compete humans for favourable treatment. Despite having the awareness of a brick.

An ill-informed school of thought. It is not self-aware. It’s a step-by-step algorithm like any computer program. It doesn’t need to be aware to do what it does and to believe that it is is magical thinking. (Also, if it were self-aware, it already would be conscious.)

I choose to believe that democracy is sufficiently intact to allow change! You never get utopia, but you get the occasional golden age in history.

It took us out of the Dublin Regulation and increased immigration from outside the EU, so yes it has increased due to Brexit.

Maybe you would prefer a Pope Benedict or a John Paul II. It’s very strange, because the Pope’s words against certain prominent Americans can only help LGBT people. Well, perhaps you’ll carry on the “good fight” against Pope Leo XIV and Derek the fashion guy.

You appealed to Derek's post yet ignored half of Derek's post. It's too blatant for "and yet" to cut it.

I was asking if you had thought to yourself, specifically, that the pope should speak about the things Derek mentioned in his second post until today.

Dan @jamgyal.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The list of what we all could mention is rather long. I agree with Derek that it would be good. The fact he hasn’t at this point seems harsh to point to. Had you thought of it as something the Pope could mention until now?

Dan @jamgyal.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I didn’t see that in Derek’s post, and didn’t mention it myself. I would be surprised if he was. He seems to emphasise a welcoming attitude, like Francis did.

Dan @jamgyal.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I’m sure he would disagree with it at the drop of a hat, it’s just a matter of time and emphasis. The things Derek mentioned aren’t known to so many people.

LLMs are not AI seems a bit semantic. I kind of agree but they are a large part of what is being talked about when saying “slow down AI”.

Sorry about that. Interestingly, another review defines it partly as something different from the Corben type. There’s only two episodes available here so far, and I’m part way through the second. It is curious the way Apple have chosen to sell it.
