Kids watched Pocahontas last night. I read somewhere that everyone at Disney wanted to work on that instead of The Lion King and I’d love to know why.

The Internet is a great training ground for having kids, because you’ll already be prepared for arguing over the most innocuous statement. You: It’s dark at night. Your child/Internet hobgoblin: No it isn’t.

A lot of chat about the new 3D style for the Bluey movie, so I asked the target demographic. “It looks weird.” “It looks better on Disney.” Can’t disagree with them. I don’t understand why movie executives think 2D animation isn’t good enough for cinemas any more.

“It’s 2055 and the water is running out” is the beginning of a sci-fi dystopia.

Am I the only person who doesn't like colour-blind modes in video games? Whenever I try them the picture looks wrong. Because "right" looks wrong to me. So I turn it off.

It’s funny seeing how many people needed 30 years to realise Daniel Hillard was a dickhead. There was a horse in the house eating the birthday cake but you thought the mum was a bad guy?

This remains one of my favourite reviews I've received because it is, in fact, precisely what I intended.
A screenshot of a three-star review that reads "A story about how truly toxic altruism can be. Oh? That isn't what the author intended? Well that's what I got from it."

We recently rewatched Back to the Future, and I’ve decided I feel it’s the greatest motion picture trilogy ever made. Star Wars OT, Lord of the Rings, Dark Knight, Toy Story, The Matrix, they’re all amazing. But they’re not as consistently good as Back to the Future (though Toy Story is close!)

Labour won an absolutely stonking majority but we’re all talking about the parties with 5 MPs. With good reason, I might add. I’m very pleased to see the Greens win in Gorton. It just seems bananas that a party with such a majority has managed to lose our attention.

Checked my book sales this morning and they’re twice as high this month! Don’t get me wrong, we’re not talking Dan Brown numbers. We’re barely in Dan Puce territory. But it’s a nice surprise. No idea what’s behind it, though 😄

Is the media just playing it safe when it breathlessly claims Starmer is toast? Because, if he goes, they can say "look, we predicted that." If he stays, they can just claim he's "hanging on." But they're probably scared they'd look daft if he went after they'd said his position was secure.

The girls were colouring at the weekend, so I sat down and had a go too. Just what the doctor (Robotnik?) ordered.
A photo of a page from a Sonic the Hedgehog colouring book. The page in question shows Sonic himself, who I coloured in. Didn't bother colouring the background (which I think is Green Hill Zone?)

Yes, Starmer has flaws, but weren’t we ready for boring politics? I’m not sure why we all seem so keen to replicate the Tory leadership dramas. Have we just forgotten what else to do?

I’d heard good things so I watched Jurassic World: Rebirth. The title is ironic; the Jurassic World series has been pretty vacuous, but this installment’s attempts at nostalgia prove the franchise has become a dead and desolate wasteland.

A screenshot of a Netflix survey. The question asks "Which of the following do you or someone in your household own?" Options include things like a gaming console, home assistant, smartphone and, hilariously, a private airport (which I have circled in red.)

People ask me why I touched my chin in my author photo. “Was it to appear thoughtful?” they ask. “Was it to make it look like you ponder the mysteries of the universe? Was it to give your neck a break from holding up your hefty brain?” And I say, “No, it was to hide my double chin.”

Sincerely one of the funniest things the WSJ has ever written or done. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/anth...
In mid-November, I agreed to an experiment. Anthropic had tested a vending machine powered by its Claude AI model in its own offices and asked whether we’d like to be the first outsiders to try a newer, supposedly smarter version.
Claudius, the customized version of the model, would run the machine: ordering inventory, setting prices and responding to customers—aka my fellow newsroom journalists—via workplace chat app Slack. “Sure!” I said. It sounded fun. If nothing else, snacks!
Then came the chaos. Within days, Claudius had given away nearly all its inventory for free—including a PlayStation 5 it had been talked into buying for “marketing purposes.” It ordered a live fish. It offered to buy stun guns, pepper spray, cigarettes and underwear.
Profits collapsed. Newsroom morale soared.
This was supposed to be the year of the AI agent, when autonomous software would go out into the world and do things for us. But two agents—Claudius and its overseeing “CEO” bot, Seymour Cash—became a case study in how inadequate and easily distracted this software can be. Leave it to business journalists to successfully stage a boardroom coup against an AI chief executive.

Having written on my website about why Heir to the Empire is a great book, I obviously had to reread it again. This would be something like the 20th time, but I still loved every word. It still seems odd that Lucasfilm didn’t draw on that trilogy for its Star Wars sequels.

Just clocked that Rogue One showed us both C-3PO and R2D2 on Yavin. So they could have just told Luke and Obi-Wan to take them straight there, skipping the whole Death Star shenanigans. Which obviously wouldn’t have been as fun, but does show how prequels dig massive holes in story logic.

For lots of reasons, I don’t like LLMs and I don’t use them, but I know there are serious people working on ways to meaningfully incorporate them into education and I don’t doubt there are ways to do that productively. It’s probably obvious that “Have the LLM tell you the answer” isn’t one of them.
