Heartfelt and often heartbreaking, Willy Vlautin's "The Left and the Lucky" is populated with big characters and a range of working-class lives I rarely see in fiction. www.jamesseidler.com/book-review-...
Book cover: The Left and the Lucky by Willy Vlautin. We see an illustration of a red classic car with a boy leaning out the window, his arm in the air.

Gary has a terrible history of neglect and disinvestment rooted in racism, but the power outages are affecting a broad swathe of Northwest Indiana. I am fortunate to live in a well-off area, and I still don't have power nine days after the storm.

I create Facebook/Meta ads once a year for a small family-run event, and I am stunned at how bad the platform and interface have gotten. You have to wade through prompt after prompt to turn off AI optimizations that would have looked amateurish on a JibJab animation 20 years ago.

Doing a full listen through the Grateful Dead discography, and I was surprised how well "Shakedown Street" landed. It's slick, but the cleanness lets you hear how tight the band it and how inventive Jerry is with his lead lines. I guess I'm ready for my Steely Dan phase...

I'd never read anything by Paco Roca, but "Return to Eden" swept me away. It's a sad, delicately illustrated memoir of his mother's life. Roca shares her early years in the context of her broken family, hungry and devastated in the wake of the Spanish Civil War. www.fantagraphics.com/collections/...

It tracks that Wimpy is uninvested in the patriarchy.
Wimpy and the Sea Hag drink tea. Sea Hag: “You’re the strangest man I’ve ever met. You don’t seem to be afraid of me—me, the terrible cruel Sea Hag—she-devil of the Seven Seas.” Wimpy: “Ha! Why should I be afraid of one so beautiful—I admire strong women—strength to me is beauty—you are strong of will.”

Reading the third volume of the complete “Popeye” collection from Fantagraphics, and J. Wellington Wimpy has repeatedly cracked me up. An oddball, all-American original.
Popeye says, “Say—didn’t ya even sell no hamburgers at all.”

Wimpy, in apron, replies, “Ah me—I did—I sold one sandwich—the customer took it away from me by force—he acted with the agility of a cat, the scoundrel!! I have the dime in my pocket.”
