I've been struck by how many first-year students seem to be scribbling down handwritten notes from my lectures, almost transcribing them word-for-word with pen and paper. This must be promising in this day and age.

For our final September recommendation, we have to include "Teaching 'Beowulf': Practical Approaches," edited by Larry Swain and Ophelia Eryn Hostetter. Balancing both pedagogy and research, this is an invaluable volume for any instructor. Snag yours here --> wmich.edu/medievalpubl...
Cover of "Teaching 'Beowulf'."Text reading: "“Beowulf” is by far the most popular text of the medieval world taught in American classrooms, at both the high school and undergraduate levels. More students than ever before wrestle with Grendel in the darkness of Heorot or venture into the dragon’s barrow for gold and glory. This practical guide to teaching “Beowulf” in the twenty-first century combines scholarly research with pedagogical technique, imparting a picture of how the poem can be taught in contemporary American institutions."

Really pleased to have contributed a little chapter to this Palgrave Handbook of Medieval Literature and Science, and even more pleased that it exists, or will soon exist, and that it makes the case for scientific thinking in premodern literary periods: link.springer.com/book/9783032...

Remember seeing this creative and generous critical translation of this poem at Leeds in 2014. It was already a sustained project rooted in creative translation practice and research back then, and it is a good time to be revisiting it now.

Looking forward to teaching Old English: Writing the Unreadable Past again, a module I've been teaching since arriving at UoM in 2014. After their first intro to Beowulf, it allows students to learn Old English but also encourages them to get creative with it: www.academia.edu/12154653/ENG...

In the two or three days that remain for research - before another academic year of teaching - I'm making some small revisions to my creative and critical responses to the Old English Panther, Whale and Partridge. This short creative-critical piece should be complete soon!
