Interesting in that respect that, so far, Farage (and so far as I've seen the same is true of other leading Brexiters) hasn't responded to what Burnham said about Brexit at all - all the focus is on the pension triple lock. That would have been/ was very different even a couple of years ago.

One interesting consequence of Burnham’s truth-telling today on Brexit, and plan to set out what I hope will be a path to rejoin, is that Farage will be forced back onto what is now - funnily enough - his least favourite subject. Let’s see him defend his inheritance in detail.

Today, at last, a serving British PM levelled with the electorate by stating the unarguable truth about the decision the UK took in 2016. “Brexit has done more harm than good.” All to play for now. Nothing should be off the table.

At the O2 in London watching the Laver Cup, and when a cry of “USA, USA” went up for Taylor Fritz, the whole place rang out in sustained booing. It is quite a startling indication of how the reputation of our once greatest ally has been trashed by you know who in recent years.

Tonight’s revelations about Reform demonstrate why getting ALL big money out of politics is long overdue. The 2007 Phillips report showed exactly how it should be done. Burnham would get huge credit for being the PM to finally act. He should announce party funding reform tomorrow.

Scrapping tax-free shopping (still offered by every EU country) was a terrible mistake. @mayoroflondon.bsky.social today calls for its return in the Budget. A new report from Cebr concludes that would boost economic growth by £11.5bn and sustain 153,000 jobs. www.thetimes.com/business/eco...

Shocked & saddened to hear of the death of Paul Barnes, CEO of the Assn of International Retail. We were in constant contact in recent years on the campaign to restore tax-free shopping and other issues he cared about, such as business rates. He brought great energy and enthusiasm to all he did. To celebrate Brexit I propose that my village withdraws from the UK, declares sovereignty and stops paying tax to the uk govt. Of course, we still want govt funding, to travel freely around the country, use the NHS and other services, but as a small village we hold all the cards!

Brexiteers constantly try to dismiss polls showing a clear majority of voters want to rejoin the EU by saying they’ll change their minds when it becomes clear the UK would have to join the euro and Schengen. Tonight Michel Barnier makes clear our old opt outs would be reinstated

One amusing byproduct of the Labour leadership candidates advocating the UK returning to Europe is that Farage will be forced back onto what is now, for obvious reasons, his least favourite subject: Brexit. Let’s see him forced to defend it in every interview.

Sky News projecting a national vote share for Reform of 27%, based on results so far. That’s four points down on what they achieved in local elections last year. Somewhat of a counter to the prevailing narrative. More evidence that Reform appears to have peaked.

Threatening to withhold resources from areas that don’t vote the “right” way is an old if profoundly undemocratic trick of authoritarian regimes down the ages. Reform are going a step further and promising active punishment. How will voters respond to blackmail? I don’t think it will be popular.

This sort of rhetoric would have ended any previous presidency. But the US establishment has accepted, normalised and encouraged it, so it will be forgotten by tomorrow, and the reputation of the US dragged a little further into the gutter.

Farage and co are promising to “reverse the Boriswave” again today. Apart from the fact that two of the main architects of Tory home affairs policy at the time are now senior figures in Reform, net migration is already down 80% since the Boris peak. Is it too much to ask our media to point this out?

Good to see Ed Miliband has approved the UK’s largest solar farm, despite the usual hysterical NIMBY protests and media coverage absurdly likening it to Chernobyl. The UK urgently needs to ensure independent energy security, and has stood back and watched China race ahead on solar in recent years.

Finally, a senior UK politician in the shape of Sadiq Khan has broken the Brexit omertà and called for the UK to rejoin. Interesting to see EU politicians making public overtures too. Crucially, Khan wants the authority to come from an election manifesto and not another traumatic referendum. Bravo.

Rachel Reeves declares tonight: “Brexit has not been good for our country, for growth, for prices in the shop.” Correct, if almost 10 years late. But she goes on to say we voted leave and “that ship has sailed”. Why, when the disaster is now apparent to all, should we accept “that ship has sailed”?
