Interesting in that respect that, so far, Farage (and so far as I've seen the same is true of other leading Brexiters) hasn't responded to what Burnham said about Brexit at all - all the focus is on the pension triple lock. That would have been/ was very different even a couple of years ago.

One interesting consequence of Burnham’s truth-telling today on Brexit, and plan to set out what I hope will be a path to rejoin, is that Farage will be forced back onto what is now - funnily enough - his least favourite subject. Let’s see him defend his inheritance in detail.

Today, at last, a serving British PM levelled with the electorate by stating the unarguable truth about the decision the UK took in 2016. “Brexit has done more harm than good.” All to play for now. Nothing should be off the table.

At the O2 in London watching the Laver Cup, and when a cry of “USA, USA” went up for Taylor Fritz, the whole place rang out in sustained booing. It is quite a startling indication of how the reputation of our once greatest ally has been trashed by you know who in recent years.

They’re great, a pair of brothers from NYC. I’d describe their music as art rock/jangle pop, very inspired by the music of the 60s and 70s. Terrific live - amazing harmonies! We’re seeing Phoebe in London in December.

Tonight’s revelations about Reform demonstrate why getting ALL big money out of politics is long overdue. The 2007 Phillips report showed exactly how it should be done. Burnham would get huge credit for being the PM to finally act. He should announce party funding reform tomorrow.

Scrapping tax-free shopping (still offered by every EU country) was a terrible mistake. @mayoroflondon.bsky.social today calls for its return in the Budget. A new report from Cebr concludes that would boost economic growth by £11.5bn and sustain 153,000 jobs. www.thetimes.com/business/eco...

Shocked & saddened to hear of the death of Paul Barnes, CEO of the Assn of International Retail. We were in constant contact in recent years on the campaign to restore tax-free shopping and other issues he cared about, such as business rates. He brought great energy and enthusiasm to all he did. It’s my favourite record of hers since Scarlet’s Walk. The way she leans into the changes in her voice and marries it with the theme of embracing ageing is very moving. I still can’t quite believe 23 Peaks was improvised on the spot.

The Trent/Tori lore runs deep. Supposedly they were a thing in the 90s until Courtney Love got in the way. Tori went on to write Professional Widow and She’s Your Cocaine about Courtney and Caught a Lite Sneeze about Trent. She references Courtney by name on her new album so the feud is finally over

You’re in for a treat. Her voice has changed a bit in her 60s - she’s gained 4 notes at the bottom for what she’s lost at the top. The arrangements with the backing singers are spectacular. So many of her songs have layered vocals and sound so good like this. open.spotify.com/playlist/2Xf...

23 Peaks is extraordinary and as you say something very different for Tori… it reminds me of epic Bjork songs like Stonemilker and also of Anna Von Hausswolff’s work. Did you know she improvised the vocal on the spot? Luckily her sound crew just happened to have the tape running.

James Chapman @jamesmchapman.bsky.social · 09/07/2026

An epic song… but Gold Dust and 23 Peaks have the edge as her greatest closers for me.

You should check out the new album In Times of Dragons. It’s easily her best since Scarlet’s Walk for me. She has a deep new register in her sixties which she embraces brilliantly. Blue Lotus, 23 Peaks, Song of Sorrow, St Teresa, Tempest, Provincetown… all as good as the 90s stuff.

Disagree re Tori’s later stuff, she’s been on a big upswing since Night of Hunters and In Times of Dragons, her new one, has got her best reviews for 25 years. For me it’s easily her best record since Scarlet’s Walk. Songs like Reindeer King, Blue Lotus, Forest of Glass all as good as the 90s stuff.
