Please send your friend this @lucymaloney.bsky.social council update from July 18 - www.onecityvancouver.ca/news/oc_upda...
OneCity newsletter update from
Councillor Lucy Maloney: Prioritizing a 50m Indoor Competition-Standard Swimming Pool “One of my Capital Plan amendments did make it through ABC; Council approved my motion to expedite planning for a year-round, 50-metre indoor swimming and diving pool complex that would be suitable for training, competition, and water polo. The motion ensures that critical consultation and design work, as well as a location decision, can occur in time to ensure consideration of construction funding in the 2031-2034 Capital Plan.
I am one of the many Vancouverites that would like to have seen a brand-new 50m, competition-appropriate indoor swimming pool completed before the decommissioning of the current Vancouver Aquatic Center. As a result of this amendment, a future Council will cut the ribbon on a rebuilt Vancouver Aquatic Centre in 2030-and will also have the key pieces in place to move ahead with a new 50-metre indoor competition swimming pool four years later or sooner.

There, I fixed it.
B.C. Premier David Eby appears at a podium with a sign that reads STANDING STRONG FOR BC. Off to the side is a mockup of a new highway sign that will greet drivers arriving in the province from the United States. The new sign reads "Welcome to British Columbia, Canada. Strong, proud, and will NEVER be the 51st state. Sorry!" I have edited the image to cross out the word "sorry."

From the CleanBC review:
In its 2023 budget, the province
committed $100 million to fund such active transportation infrastructure over three years.
While this represented the province’s largest investment of its kind until that point, given active transportation’s extensively documented co-benefits, the amount is modest. (To put it into perspective, the funding amounts to 0.2% of the $5 billion the province subsequently directed to widening Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley.)

#Vancouver City Manager Paul Mochrie apologizes for yesterday’s by-election shitshow. Thoughts?
Today, City Manager Paul Mochrie released the following statement regarding the April 5, 2025 municipal by-election:
“Yesterday, City of Vancouver voters elected two new city councillors in the municipal by-election, with approximately 67,962 ballots cast and voter turnout of 15.09 per cent, a 40 per cent increase from the 2017 by-election.
I want to thank each voter for your commitment to the democratic process and for the remarkable patience you demonstrated during long wait times experienced over the course of the day at many polling stations across the city.
Moreover, I want to acknowledge that voting wait times that many electors experienced yesterday were unacceptable. The extended wait times at many voting places reflected flawed planning assumptions for this by-election that informed staff decisions and the plan presented to Council. Recognizing the effort by the City’s elections team to promote and execute this plan, it was clearly insufficient to accommodate the electorate in accessing an efficient voting process. These shortcomings are deeply regrettable and I apologize to all voters impacted by delays, as well as to candidates and civic parties. I, along with City staff, are committed to ensure that lessons from yesterday’s by-election inform the planning and execution of the 2026 general municipal election and all future City of Vancouver election efforts.
The conduct of elections is one of our responsibilities as a local government that does not present a margin for error. Our role is to provide a voting process that is efficient, accessible, and reflective of the trust that voters and elected officials place in the civil service to support the electoral process. We will do better moving forward.”
