Thank you @adriennebuller.bsky.social - it has been a sad and weirdly lonely experience to see groups with 'climate' in their name erase the word 'climate' from their statements. An unforced error. www.newstatesman.com/environment/... www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZe7... (unpaywalled interview)
"What I know for certain is that failing to talk about climate change does little but cede ground to those who would deny its existence, or deny that action must be taken in response to it. It is to abdicate our responsibility to prevent the worst versions of the future for which we may be on track, but which can yet be avoided.

There is no time for nostalgia for movements past. The conditions that fuelled 2019’s highs are gone. Instead, we must build something different to meet this moment...Perhaps, as the world confronts the rising impacts of the climate crisis, from deadly heatwaves and floods storming ill-prepared cities, to the choking smoke of wildfires from Spain to Australia to Canada’s boreal forests, there is room to build not on fear or hopelessness, but on the tangible work of adapting to this new world together."

What in the ever-loving fuck is this? Does anything happen between the ears of this man?
Peter Malinauskas with a shit-eating grin posting on Instagram with the caption:
I want to ensure the government is doing everything it can to make sure artificial intelligence delivers real benefits for people.

OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, the world’s most popular AI chatbot.

While in San Francisco, I visited OpenAI’s headquarters and signed a memorandum of understanding with their Co-Founder and President Greg Brockman.

It means the State Government will work with OpenAI to explore opportunities to develop AI skills, accelerate local research and innovation, attract global investment and spread the benefits of AI across South Australia.

It hardly bears repeating, but if, say, Hanson had described Judaism, rather than Islam, as a disease requiring eradication, I reckon she might have gotten into trouble. As it stands, the AFP agrees that her stating there are no 'good' Muslims is 👌.

One of my course coordinators has clearly used AI to write every word of the course content. But worse than that, even the responses to questions in forums are clearly written by AI. The tone is obnoxious. The syntax terrible. Most of it says nothing. The worst part: the subject is digital literacy.

Just an uninformed hunch, but I reckon you could divert quite a few people from the NDIS by raising the rate of welfare to something and adequately resourcing public healthcare and education. Never seems to come up. Seems our only option is to throw people with disabilities to the wolves.

IMO the two biggest dangers of AI are that it affirms everything you think and that it destroys your critical thinking. And each reinforces the other. The more you lean on it for your thinking, the more it reinforces it. And the more it reinforces it, the more you rely on it. Very bad.

OH MY HEART...the Oberlin Luddites Reject "The Year of AI Exploration"! 💚
photograph or a poster on cream colored paper. "Dear President Ambar,
we are writing to you on a typewriter that is over 70 years old. This is a
machine that we all know well. With it, we misspell words without the crutch of spell check or generative AI and we think intently about every phrase we pound out. As we force ourselves, for once, to slow down, we engage in a cognitive dialogue with ourselves. We do not seek perfection because we know that education is about the growing and challenging of our young minds' potential, not the chasing of institutional 'gold-star' approval. We do not believe that your so-called 'Year of AI Exploration; providing enterprise ChatGPT and Google Gemini subscriptions to every Oberlin student aligns with our college's founding principles. You claim that this year will be one of experimentation, not adoption. But even just one semester of accepted (encouraged even) chat bot use will jettison our student body down a lazy and irredeemable tunnel of intellectual destruction. We are a college grounded in learning and labor, which now risks straying from these rooted ideals. With ChatGPT at the helm, our emails, essays, and discussion posts will be generated for us, not by us. And let's not fool ourselves. This is precisely what these platforms will be used for by our busy, anxious student body. We see your vision for this year as.advancing the college's 'businessification'--an alarming trend also seen in the takeover of our beloved library cafe by a 'bookstore' with no books in stock and an app replacing customer service. In one instance, the college assumes we want efficiency at all costs through automated rather than hand pulled coffee. In the other lies the false belief that we simply desire to turn in an essay, regardless of how little we've written of it." there's more that doesn't fit in the 2000 character limit :(

After the Harbour Bridge march showed Labor they might've misread the public mood on Palastine. Luke Hilakari was sent to speak at the march in Melbourne. Some people heckled him the entire time, and while some people were confused, I present this as evidence that they were very right to do it
Mr Hilakari said Trade Unionists for Palestine was a “branch of whatever socialist alternative group is out there”. “I think you find in every union there is a group that is organising around this but it is a deliberate organising strategy of Victorian socialists,” he said.
“I think they know the union movement and Trades Hall has influence, has some power. I think some of these people have been trying to get a hold of that. It doesn’t feel like it worked.”
Calling for a community summit to tackle extremism, Mr Hilakari said: “The extreme left is horrible, absolutely horrible, and can be completely out of control. Then we have got Nazis marching the streets of capital cities, so we have got some problems to sort out.”
