A racy short story by the ‘father of modern computing’ rips up Alan Turing’s ‘isolated mathematician’ image, revealing a playful man overcoming trauma and defiantly embracing his homosexuality.

It is a computer by virtue of these capacities, the author does not understand the difference between a computational model and a model of computation. That a Turing machine bounds the brain's capacities above implies no resemblance.

WAVE (1994) Acrylic on Canvas - 48” x 48” Of all the paintings hanging in my home, this one probably elicits the most comments. #art
An exponential curve expressed as a massive wave of green-blue water that climbs to vertical against a sky of puffy lavender clouds. Light breaks through the cloud cover just over the horizon casting a flat glare across rippling water before the wave climbs. Fin-like ridges emerge running up the wall give the water turbulence and dimension.

That fork against the Cartesian denial of souls to animals is what I see as the intended and successful argument. La Mettrie describes the production of sensations as rendering in a mental theater, but simply holds this to admit mechanical, material explanation after the image of a magic lantern.

Jay Alt @jalt.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I think one can follow La Mettrie in first reducing the soul to imagination, and holding imagination to be the primary mental faculty, then claiming that the soul is an "enlightened machine" whose faculties are attributable to material processes, which exist alike in animals, fatally to Cartesianism

I think the argument against dualism goes fine, just doesn't do much to eliminate soul or mind, and it is not clear to me it is intended to. La Mettrie says soul is imagination and attributes reasoning capacities to the same,

He explains that the soul is a vacuous concept in practice except as a word for imagination, but rather than denying it he then attributes it to animals.

Dude I think it's better to take chance with republican who are gonna accelerate rather than with democrat. So many of democrat future nominees are talking about regulating ai hack some are trying to ban it . We can vote for democrat after we have singularity until then best to vote for party that is at least trying to accelerate.
