I do really *like* the OSTs for this era of shows (for the original run), but that's me being my own age.

Okay, it's not like the original show has a *lot* of music, so much as it has a lot of walla and room sound and relies on stingers more than sound design for interactions with the environment. Truly, it's just a difference in what's popular then vs. now.

I won't give any deep analysis, since this property is old enough that a lot of people may be coming to it for the first time, but I'm having fun~ I'm paying too much attention to sound, but I don't really think this stuff will stand out that muc... Wait is that a vibraphone???

The sound design is all really fun!! But yeah, if you compare it directly, there's very little music, the actors are heavily compressed (which really lets you notice the way their breath interacts with their speech), and there's a lot of emphasis on sound design.

I am admittedly only 3 minutes into the new Rayearth (which is gorgeous!) but the thing that sticks out to me the most right now is wow, no background music at all, huh. ...Ah!! We get some at 4 minutes in!

If I had a nickel for every time an Anno protag had a breakdown about the meaning of their existence followed by them being told "Congratulations!" by the supporting cast, I'd have TWO NICKELS.

I do have to say, everyone who enjoyed Eva should go back and watch Nadia, because there are a few things that'll really make you laugh.

I'm going to be so mad if the Island Arc episodes are perfectly tolerable and I'm just doing nonsense for no reason based on advice from 20 years in the past... (The actual advice was to skip those episodes altogether; I'm the one making it more complicated than it needs to be.)

I got to the Island Arc of Nadia last night and decided to watch it in the most convoluted order possible to balance out "amount of plot enjoyed" and "amount of pain endured," so it's like, Finish ep22, then... - 35 - 23, 24, 25 - 36 - 26, 27, 28 - 37 - 29, 30, 31 - 38 - 32, 33, 34 - 39

It's so exciting~! I feel like it snuck up on me! There was a lot of discussion when it was first announced, and then not so much until the voice actor reveal, so I'm just like,, "it's already here!?" I have the original series on DVD, so maybe I'll do a comparison ✨

I'm watching Nadia, and really the least realistic thing is these bad guys not taking off their weird hoods no matter what the presumed heat or humidity levels are.

A bunch of people in double-breasted military coasts, gloves, and some unfortunate pointy hoods with masks on the front. The leader's coat has a suit and tie style opening and is red; everyone else is in green with white bandoliers. I bet they would faint if they tried standing in line for Summer Comiket; they look unprepared for heat.

Ah...! It's really embarrassing in retrospect! One of the ones I got wrong all the time years ago was ヒマ. I thought it was just "free time," so I would answer questions about my availability with ああ、あの日はヒマがない, and,,, it's a good thing those were not professional contacts in a high pressure job...

(When I was a kid, everyone said there's no way to become fluent without living in Japan, so by those standards, I'm doing okay...) (Actually, a friend called me "日本語の変態" a little while ago, which is such a leap from "日本語上手," even if that phrase is incredible by itself.)

That band is the reason I studied audio engineering and moved out here, so I'm really grateful to have had that opportunity. Even fun little hobbies can completely change your life~ (My life is informed almost solely by fun little hobbies, maybe.)

Also, the song "again" by YUI activates me in that I always think it's even faster than it actually is (it's already quite fast) because our drummer thought it was funny to force me to say words real quick lmao

I don't know that the recording exists anymore, but I was in a cover band that did a bilingual cover of Utada Hikaru's "Sanctuary"/"Passion," and even now, a decade+ later, I can't hear either song without both sets of lyrics playing in my head.
