I'm watching Nadia, and really the least realistic thing is these bad guys not taking off their weird hoods no matter what the presumed heat or humidity levels are.

A bunch of people in double-breasted military coasts, gloves, and some unfortunate pointy hoods with masks on the front. The leader's coat has a suit and tie style opening and is red; everyone else is in green with white bandoliers. I bet they would faint if they tried standing in line for Summer Comiket; they look unprepared for heat.

Wait wait wait!!! I have to share this before I end the evening; I flipped ahead...! Look, look, look!!

Lalah and Char. I mentioned this earlier, but Char already has a scar in this novel, and you can see it here, where he's holding his mask while walking over to the windowsill where Lalah is seated. There are screenprints used here for Lalah's dress, the shadows on her face, and the interior of the room she's in. Char is shaded with hatching only, as is the rest of the background behind him. He looks happy, she looks serene.

I don't have any idea who illustrated these first editions, but if you know, please tell me! They're not credited in the front or back of the book, that I can tell.

They're inside a transparent bag shaped like the sparkling heart emoji. It's hot pink, was bought on impulse, and matches basically nothing in my wardrobe.

I *was* hungry; I ate well. Thanks to Izakaya Funhouse in Little Tokyo. (I love being able to walk to restaurants; I love being able to drink and walk home ✨) Thanks for the delicious food~

Tomato curry with veggie croquette, Asahi beer, at Izakaya Funhouse. You can see a "The Cure" decoration on the bar dividing wall behind the food, but the whole restaurant is done up with punk posters. It's fun and delicious!

Oh no, I'm in love with the streetwear brand in Little Tokyo

A store interior filled with paper lanterns, mannequims with rabbit heads, neon signs, and clothing racks filled with T-shirts, jackets, and jersey sets. The color theming on this half of the store is black and pink, and you can see some of the black and construction yellow stuff on the left side of the photo.

I brought the only of my mini-figurines who's not in storage to see Hathaway with me, but the cupholder looks like a jacuzzi.

I'm reading the second of Larsson's Millenium trilogy and there's a description of the history of Grenada up to 1983, and I'm thinking about the Moon.

Grenada was one of many small, former-British colonies. In 1795, Julian Fedon, a black planter of mixed French ancestry, led an uprising inspired by the French Revolution. Troops were sent to shoot, hang, or maim the rebels. What had shaken the colonial regime was that even poor whites, so-called petits blancs, had joined Fedon's rebellion without the least regard for racial boundaries. The uprising was crushed, but Fedon was never captured; he vanished into the mountainous Grand Etang and (ctd. next page)

became a Robin Hood-like legend. Some two hundred years later, in 1979, a lawyer called Maurice Bishop started a new revolution, which the guidebook said was inspired by the Communist dictatorships in Cuba and Nicaragua. I have found the official Gundam Cafe Osaka Dotonbori "Gundam but everyone speaks with an Osakaben" mug at my local anime reseller. It is mine now. 💖💖💖

Famous Gundam scenes and phrases, but the speech bubbles are modified lines to give the characters Osaka dialecs.

It's entirely Zeon characters, now that I look at it closely. (Lalah is also here like, "Is there anyone who could hate something beautiful?" but Osaka-ly.)

I'm seeing people complain about "Bluesky's translation function," but is this one of those things where iPhone makes a decision for the user and Android leaves it up to the user what app to translate with??? For me, I get lots of choices (some nonsensical).

"Complete action using" menu with nine apps of varying actual suitability for the task of translating text. Google Translate is selected by default, but I can also try translating with encryption apps, notes and todo list apps, and even a text expansion app.

I wrote a little blurb a year or do ago about the "you can never go home" trope in JRPGs and how Earthbound's subversion of that is my favorite thing.

SNES era JRPGs are fun, but I have a complaint about the formula.

I think only the "Mother" series really gets the "you can never go home" trope right.

Usually, the hero is cast out of his village, or it's destroyed in front of him, and the will to protect what remains is tied up in the legendary sword he carries. The sword is compensation for his loss. It's a symbol of loss, love, and resolve.

But really, any normal child will want to return to their hometown more than they'll want a sword and a destiny.

I understand that swords and destinies are more entertaining for the real life child holding the controller, but that's only because that child has a home to return to. The home where they're holding the controller.

If you asked the child if they'd rather have a sword or a home, the vast majority, if they really thought it through, would long for a home on a primal level.

"Mother" (and here, I really mean "Mother 2," which is the main one I've played) bakes this into the mechanics. In the first place, it takes a lot of walking, but you can go home. You can talk to your mom. You can sleep in your room.

In the second place, you get homesick unless you call home every so often.

In the third place, the tragedy of the game is the point at which you can no longer go home. This isn't the beginning of the game. The loss, love, and resolve is the finale.
