Restorative justice reduces reoffending and can offer victims the answers they seek. That’s why I have appointed Jacob Dunne as an expert adviser on youth justice here at the MoJ 👇

My constituent Simon lost his son, Sam, five years ago. Sam was just 16 when he lost his life in a local reservoir. Since then, Simon set up ‘Sam’s Army’s Mission’ and has been campaigning to increase awareness of the dangers associated with swimming in open waters.

The World Cup starts tonight! But we will be a man down after the first game. Someone takes their own life in our country every 90 minutes. Three-quarters of these are men. I spoke with Luke the co-founder of @AndysManClub about male suicide, mental health and the help that is out there. 👇

Great to chat to GB News about the government’s work on Men and Boys. And a bit about why I’m passionate about amplifying this cause (and when I last cried!). We talked about GarethSouthgate's documentary on young men, which millions have been watching. And the issues facing young men today.

Criminal justice cooperation with our partner countries is a vital part of keeping our citizens safe and ensuring criminals face justice. Yesterday, I was pleased to sign a new agreement with Latvia to improve prisoner transfers. This follows upon a similar agreement struck with Italy last month.

13,000 children are sentenced in our courts each year. 33% of them go on to reoffend. The youth court was an important change. But now it’s time to look again at its approach and effectiveness from first principles. @lawsocietygazette.bsky.social www.lawgazette.co.uk/commentary-a...

Successful leaders do not use their platform to divide, but to bring people together to face our collective challenges. The current MP for Clacton doesn’t get this. That is why we will work tirelessly to make the positive case to defeat him. 🌹

Labour can very legitimately be criticised on many fronts, but pretty depressing to see the Guardian seemingly suggest that cracking down on dirty foreign money being laundered into UK politics through crypto - which is objectively in the national interest - is a political move just to spite Reform.

Rehabilitation must be at the heart of the youth justice system. This will turn around young lives and better protect our communities. Punishment that works. Important to learn from other systems as we develop our modernisation programme. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Best day in the job so far - bringing Tony Hudgell and his parents to Downing Street to meet Keir Starmer to celebrate the creation of a child cruelty register. There is a lot more work to do. But because of the Hudgell’s courage, lives will be saved.

I’ve also asked @Rachel_deSouza to look at how we improve education provision in Youth Custody. The current provision, despite the dedicated staff, is not fit for purpose - and we need to ensure child offenders get access to the skills they need to turn their backs on crime.

Designed by youth justice services, these plans will focus on the child’s needs and help them turn their back on crime for ever. Children could receive intensive mentoring or support to remain in education or access to healthcare. Whatever it takes to prevent offending.

Jake Richards MP @jakerichardsmp.bsky.social · 14/02/2026
We are also determined to dramatically reduce knife crime. Our new policy means every child caught with a knife will now receive a tailored mandatory plan to tackle the roots of their offending, whether that’s exploitation by criminal gangs or childhood trauma.

We know targeted prevention schemes can really help young people turn away from crime. I’ve seen the brilliant work of our Turnaround Programme. More than 90% of children who took part avoided future police cautions or court. That’s why we are investing in it for the long term.

Ratcliffe’s comments are offensive to those who come here to contribute to our economy and public services. We share the public’s concern about immigration; that’s why we have reduced numbers dramatically. But we must be united in this challenge, not seek to inflame and divide.

Today’s Prison Capacity Statement reveals the truth. Without Labour’s prison building and sentencing reforms, our law and order system would be in crisis. Criminals left to roam the streets. Victims abandoned. Reform & the Tories are not credible in opposing our changes. 👇
