The state of research on AI and education from controlled studies: Growing evidence that, when used as a tutor with instructor guidance, AI seems to have quite significant positive effects. When used alone to get help with homework, it can act as shortcut that hurts learning. Still early days.

I don’t mean to be a broken record but AI development could stop at the o3/Gemini 2.5 level and we would have a decade of major changes across entire professions & industries (medicine, law, education, coding…) as we figure out how to actually use it & adapt our systems. AI disruption is baked in.

If you have used LLM image generators, you know they are hard to control: LLM had to send a prompt to a separate image generation tool, it did not not make the image. Gemini is the first public release of a full multimodal LLM that can directly make images. This allows the systems to do detail work

NEW: Google used to warn you when you were seeing low-quality search results. Then, in the weeks leading up to the 2024 election, the company quietly turned that warning off www.platformer.news/google-data-...
The researchers collected their first data in October 2023 and March 2024. Initially, they were struck by how inconsistently Google showed its warnings. A deep learning model they built to analyze the queries suggested that the warnings should have appeared between 29 and 58 times as often as they did in practice. For motivated conspiracy peddlers, they were easy to evade: just adding quotation marks or a single letter to a query was typically enough to make the banner disappear.

The researchers were beginning to collect additional data last September when they discovered something unexpected: Google had stopped showing low-quality banners entirely, weeks before early voting began, without disclosing it.

I actually do think the passive AI results in Google are really frustrating, like the ads that come above search results. Finding the best resource for the best answer is the real goal, and passive tools that complicate that effort are not useful, they’re harmful.

I've found this to be true, but people might look at the inaccuracies and say "what's the point of using it then?" 1st, AI's only getting better. 2nd, creators like feedback loops and learners are the same.
