Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Thanks. :) It’s a completely understandable reaction to be honest. I share it, but I think I’ve wrestled with it often as a fan of these films? My best answer is: You can do more than you think, but you can only do what you can. So what can you do? 000

Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026No one likes to sit and be told how crazy it is that we’re all frogs, boiling together in this giant pot that’s only getting hotter and yet somehow we’re not doing anything Why aren’t we doing anything, the satire screams at us So self-congratulatory we say, so smug and self-important 180
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026You can’t make a more maliciously idiotic President than Trump. You can’t make a more cartoonishly evil villain than the late-capitalist CEO You can’t make a situation more exasperatingly stupid than the one we’re in But here we are, and these movies remind us about how fucked this all is 1101
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I’m beginning to think one reason critics — and audiences — don’t like movies like Digger and Don’t Look Up is because they cause this unresolvable dissonance when you think about them. The satire feels heavy-handed because it has to go beyond the very stupid reality we’re already living. 2131
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Digger was pretty good! Surprisingly funny, with a few twists that bring complexity to this satire. I have to give Tom Cruise his kudos; it’s one of his best roles in a minute. I recommend it 040

Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026How and why were the cultural markers of the Edo developed? What were they in response to? The reason appropriation is such a bummer is that it's clear someone didn't think about the context the culture was in when this practice/art-style/philosophy came about. 010
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I think the bestanswer is education. You have to think beyond the aesthetics of what inspires you so that you're not only aping the look but truly interacting with the cultural pressures and attitudes that built the practice in the first place. What were the guiding principles of the Edo pd? 010
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Also a really important consideration! In a lot of situations it can be tough to impossible to get confirmation from first sources, that sort of thing. The more I think about it, the more I think a "Writing the Other" education would benefit me 100
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026It's definitely something you would want to do with sensitivity. I'm not sure this is *entirely* correct, but I think I would start with the "social structure" of the base animal and see what similar human cultures I could look to for inspiration. I wouldn't want to lift cultural practices wholly. 100
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026When you expand your idea of 'normal' culture to include the breath-taking variety of lifestyles that exist among humans already, it feels like you could really move into interesting, untapped potential in your furry stories. It's a paradigm-changing realization for me. o.o 390
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Maybe wolves would behave like roving nomads, roving wide territories in huge family groups from season to season Maybe bears view the winter as a holy time of meditation and solitude, like a Buddhist hermitage Maybe sharks share the same perspective as native Pacific islanders 490
Jakebe, the Hobbit Hare @jakebe.bsky.social · 02/10/2026You wouldn't think this would be a thing in furry fiction, but maybe it is. How much in the furry world we builds are based on the cultural biases ingrained within us? Maybe we don't go far enough considering the cultural changes a world of sapient animals would bring. 150
