Sometimes,
Fingertips only find fragments,
Broken clam shell words,
Dark half-sentence mussels
Crusted with barnacles And adjectives.
But sometimes,
Before concerns pick the mind clean, Or the crosscurrent of routine catches and riptide responsibilities Wash out wit on waves of doubt—
Search the blank shore
For well-worded whelks, and moon shell metaphors
Sift free the shark teeth verbs camouflaged
In gerund and infinitive shards.
And,
When toes trip on shell tips
That don't give when pressed,
Drill down.
Fall to hands and knees and dig.
Let grit grind beneath the fingernails And sting the eyes.
Embrace the wind shivering up your spine.
Ignore the surge licking your feet,
Pulling you back
The shell
Is worth the trouble.

Brush back the sand, And bits of other shells
Left by dark and stormy nights,
The broken story arcs and character clichés
Shrouding this story's shape.
Sentence sediment
Swirls loose between your hands
As you scoop,
But don't lose focus.
Keep hold of the shell.
Lift it free.
Wade back into the waves.
Check the structure for holes, Rinse the debris free,
Brush grey away
Til flashes of orange-red
Glow
Like a rising sun.

This is some of the best writing advice I've ever read. Aside: I use tarot to keep my mind attuned to playful connections between images with rich history. Each card has multiple meanings, and the cards speak to each other differently every day.

Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed with my editing work, I think back to younger me, who wanted so bad to be in my shoes and had no idea how to get here. I picture myself giving her a tour of my lit world, watching her eyes go wide, and I tell her, "You arrived," and suddenly I'm all gratitude.

I got through seasons with genre. I've done just about everything. I end up having more fantasy clients than anything, but I'm newly obsessed with whodunnit mysteries. Contemporary is probably my sweetest spot because that's what I love to read. For least, I'm not into thrillers or horror.

I freelance, so unlike an acquiring editor, I'm most interested in seeing the novel when the author needs me. The later I see a draft in the revision process, the closer we can get to a publishable state, but if someone needs help in the earlier stages, I'm here for that too!
