#KidLitChat I'm a day late, but chiming in today. I have some great creative partners. I find consistently that those who point out where I can improve, while also showing delight over areas I do well, or that they love, energize me for further revision.

I'm four weeks out from a hysterectomy. And the thing that I'm most frustrated by is how *quicky* my energy is used up. The bone-tired exhaustion from what feels to me like it should be simple. I know I'm not on here as often right now. But I'm rebuilding strength the best I can. In the long run...

Hurricane Helene 2 years ago our area had it's hundred-year flood. Our wonderfully wooded backyard suddenly turned into a threat. The creek that crawled at the bottom of a twelve plus foot ditch, broke the bank. We ended up running for the neighbor's house mid-storm, to get away from falling trees.

When the Hundred-Year Flood Hits Home by Christiana Doucette - Rattle: Poetry
There is a gapping in the chest when the water outside pours indoors. A continental shift shuts down the panic that will only drown me.

Friday I had a hysterectomy. I spent about two days mostly napping. And now I’m sending out the poetry submissions I prepped last week before surgery. And getting up to take short laps of the house every little while so I don’t lose strength.

#KidLitChat We read Watership Down when I was a kid, and I've reread that so many times. I found the different iterations of rabbit warren fascinating. And I loved the Elrairah Lore throughout

#KidLitChat The joy of sharing LotR's with the kids for the first time! AHhh!!! The first BIG book I read was The Fellowship of the Ring when I was 6yo. Because my mom was reading it aloud to my dad in the car. And she stopped reading. And I NEEDED to know what happened next.

#KidLitChat I've mentioned Mrs. PiggleWiggle in these chats before. Those are just so wildly off-the-wall. But I do occasionally masquerade as a pirate captain when rooms need to be cleaned and threaten to make kids walk the plank if the room is not swabbed. (And they giggle hysterically and do it).

#KidLitChat So one I loved as a kid was 101 Dalmations and it's sequel The Starlight Barking. I still like it for nostalgia. It's similar to the movie, but also very different.

For me ( @kristinwrites.bsky.social ) I got back into #KidLut because I have four kids. Reading has always been a huge part of my life and I wanted that for them too. I’ve read and learned so much as they’ve grown and I guide them in their reading path. As for the magazine — #KidLitChat

#KidLitChat I've always loved kids books. But the first novel length story I wrote I shared with a friend who read it and told me it had a middle grade voice. At the time I did not understand the difference between chapter book and middle grade. But I learned! And I still love middle grade!

2026 has not been a kind year to me. And the past two weeks have been especially heavy. But I’m getting up each morning and maintaining healthy routines, continuing to write even when the writing is not to the level I want yet, and continuing to find glimmers of joy each day. Today’s glimmers:
A tired looking poet at her desk. An empty mug sits on the surface behind her.

My grandmother passed away this morning. 15 minutes before, I called and my mom held the phone to Grandma’s ear. I told her how very much I loved her. What a wonderful grandmother she’d been. And how much I’d miss her. My heart keeps reaching for an empty space.
