#LitHodgepodge 2 I think the my cast would do well in the Witcher. Deadly monsters and political games. Heiden would want to be a Witcher, and Aldous would debate whose world had the better cost for magic. He also wouldn’t like Aretuza.

#AwesomeCharacters Heiden has a unique warm laugh that fills a room. Aldous loves it and wants to hear it often. Heiden also laughs sarcastically or in disbelief, but it very differently from her genuine one. And then there is her triumphant laugh after winning a battle. 1/4

With all the instances of Heiden talking about her experience as a guard, I actually chose to talk about the guards in Volla instead for today's #WIPSnip.

“Are all your guards clergy?” The woman asked as she untied her horse.

“Yeah. Well, monks technically,” Aldous said quietly, then nodded toward the six-story stone monastery near his stable, clearly visible from town, “To be a part of the militia, you must take the monk vows. It’s supposed to prevent corruption among those meant to guard us.”

“Is it the same true for stable masters?”

“No.” Aldous needed to emphasize how much he was not a monk. “I’m an acolyte employed by the cult. I could take the vows, but then I would have to give up money and bedsports.”

Not that he was getting much of either.

“Hmm.” was all the stranger said as she took in the information.

#AwesomeCharacters Heiden can accurately assess herself in her practiced skills. She is cocky, but she has the right to be. She does overestimate untested skills. E.g. She a terrible navigator, but didn't realize that until she was in the woods. She easily acknowledges Aldous is better at it. 1/2

Aldous doesn’t fit perfectly into this. He got stiff hard by fate, and he isolates himself because of his trauma. But he is also forgiving and kind, traits that make him gullible, but he won’t risk being cruel. 1/2

#AwesomeCharacters Aldous would be a black forest cake made with dark chocolate and brandy. A little bitter and usually not what people request, but not many complain when served a slice. Heiden would be a Habanero Brownies, maybe with a ghost pepper. Spicy, delicious, and needs to be more popular.

Today's #WIPSnips we got Aldous trying to escape from a Wyvern attack. The drakin picked off Berkant earlier, which is "lucky" for everyone else as he is probably that only one would could survive such an attack.

Erica kept her gloved hand trained on the wyvern.

The only indication that something happened was the air shivered. But whatever she was doing, it caused the beast crashed into the stone road with a sickening thud. It thrashed wildly, trying and failing to keep its balance. Its talons opened, dropping Berkant with a thud. He made no effort to get up after hitting the ground.

What was she doing to it? More importantly, how was she controlling her gem? Aldous’s curiosity made it hard to keep his focus on escape, like there was some key element to using gems he could observe.

If you see me writing a book, the male lead is probably bisexual. And #AwesomeCharacters Aldous is no exception. We know Aldous had a few partners in Ventus, and the majority were men. This was because men made the first move in Trikruna... and Aldous didn't. 1/2

I try to keep the number of #AwesomeCharacters with a POV as low as possible. For WIP1, is it just Aldous and Heiden. I had to switch to Heiden, otherwise there would be an important chunk missing in the middle. In WIP2, I didn't want Erica to have a POV, but, really, it's kindof her story.

I was going to skip today's #WIPSnips (as I'm rather busy today), but this is one of my favorite scenes, so I'm here on my lunch break. Aldous gets conned all the time, but usually, it's because he doesn't want to be cruel.

The horse’s head dipped low, just shy of the cneflowers he planted last spring. That job should have paid him five orts, but he never got the coin. His first stop in town had already lightened his coin pouch more than expected, and this was just yet another reminder of yet another man who owed him money.

At least he’d settled his debt with the woodcutter. Not that the man had deserved the favor. He treated his personal horses no better than the monks did. He kept them what was practically a shed and relied on Aldous to act as their farrier. Aldous knew he’d never see payment, but the horses needed new shoes. When the woodcutter named his price to replace his firewood, it had come down to a choice. Do the work or get fleeced outright. He shook his head, jaw tight. Next time, he’d cut the wood himself. But today, he plucked a few of the flowers and offered them to the palfrey. The horse, weary but willing, munched happily on the gift.

TBF, all my #AwesomeCharacters need hugs (and therapy). I’m torn: There is Aldous, who had to give up his rewards from his life of hard work. Then there is Erica. She was happy, but one bad night change everything. Now she finds getting through everyday difficult. Neither would accept a hug.

#AwesomeCharacters I rewrote a scene once because I felt Heiden would never be helpless in any situation. And that's what I like about her. Aldous had a chance for revenge and to help himself, but instead he rescued someone who had condemned him. I like his willingness to forgive.

In today's #WipSnips, we go to the early chapters where Heiden and Aldous are finally getting along. And to Aldous's surprise, he finds he can talk to Heiden quiet easy.

Aldous nodded as the conversation continued to flow effortlessly. Not even Marianne knew this much about him. It was a welcome distraction.

Was it their situation that made them bond so easily? Or was it her?

“Yeah, I hate this place, but there was always something keeping me here.”

“Well, maybe the deities kept you here to guide me. Maybe,” she said before donning a naughty grin and bringing Sandy closer, “We’re soulmates.”

Aldous let out an single laugh.

Heiden frowned and pulled away again. “I’ll try not to take offense.”

“Oh, no. No!” Aldous realized how she would have interpreted that. “I meant, it would be like the gods to do that. I got branded now that I no longer have to provide for my sister. I became an outcaste in Ventus before I got my stable. I was about to go public with courting my lover before his cousin—”

Aldous let out a long sigh and shook his head. She didn’t need to know that, and Heiden didn’t press.

Aldous got the final barrel ready. He looked exhausted. It wasn’t the weight of the barrels, or the fact that they should have laid out their bedrolls by now. No. Those dragging steps, slumped shoulders, and downward gaze were signs of something heavier pressing on his soul.

“Want me to do this one?” Heiden asked. This was taking a toll on him.

He hesitated, then shook his head. He flung the salt onto the last head. The body spasmed as the final mouth shriveled and let go.

The visvore was the biggest beast they felled, but there was no victory in this moment. This wasn’t a fight. It was an execution.

“I’m sorry,” Aldous said after a long silence.

Heiden thought he was talking to the shriveled leeched that had finally stilled.

Then he turned to her. “You had to give up so much because of me.”

CW: (Giant) Leech (and death of said leech) This #WIPSnips, was suppose to be a victory, but by the end, it becomes a bit of an exhausting downer.

Heiden tossed the salt onto the first head. It shrank immediately, detaching from the ground with a wet sound. Both she and Aldous winced as the creature uprooted its spiraling, sharp, and twisted teeth.

Two more to go.

They walked to the next head. The stench clung to everything now, like old rot. The whole situation reeked worse than an open grave.

“What’s on your mind, Killer?” she asked. “A lot’s happened.”

“I don’t know where to start.” He set the barrels down and opened one, holding it in both hands for a moment before pouring the salt on and around the second head.

This time, Heiden didn’t flinch as the leech recoiled. She felt pity.

The tail of the visvore slumped, and all its limbs twitched. It knew death was coming, but there was nothing the parasite could do.

Aldous enjoyed the training, but not the real mentees who didn't think it was fair he was there. 1/4

“It’s late, and I don’t want to talk about destiny or strategy.” She placed her hands on his chest. “I need sleep, and I know exactly what’ll do the job.”

She gave Aldous a gentle push, trying to guide him toward the bed but he didn’t budge.

“No.” His voice was confident. Then he stepped around her and pushed her onto the bed instead.

“Now, take that off,” he demanded.

No, he did not just say that. Maybe he had a bit of an ego now. No matter how much she wanted him, she wasn’t taking orders. Still… she did want him. So she gave him a chance.

She crossed her arms, “Appreciate the initiative, Killer. Wanna rephrase that as a request?”

“Sorry. How about this? Do this one little thing for me, and I’ll make sure my mouth is too busy to say anything stupid.”

#WIPSnips I actually don't use sigh that much, only like 40 times (in 101K book). However, I do use them too close together sometimes, like in this scene before I edited it. Heiden doesn't like praedica gems, but magical herbs are okay. An important distinction.

“I already cracked the shell. It’ll go bad by tomorrow. Might as well use it now.”

She gave a sharp exhale, like he was offering a hinderance, then took the paste and spread it across the gash.

Her furrow disappeared as she breathed a sigh of relief when the curofer made contact. After she applyed it, she lifted her arm and waved it around. She nodded at her limb like she approved. “It numbed my arm.”

“Actually, it just blocks pain. You’ll still feel heat and pressure.”

Skeptical, she tested it. Pushing her fingers into the paste only to reveal the wound had vanished entirely. She brushed off the rest of the paste and stared blankly at her arm. She rose it so her arm was in the light of the setting sun. Only a faint line of a scar remained. Curofer worked fast, instantly, really. Her dumbfounded expression was priceless.

He hadn’t meant to smile, but her surprise was… oddly satisfying. The tension in her face softened for just a moment, and he caught himself wanting to see it again.

#AwesomeCharacters WIP1 takes place in a span of 14-15 days, with an epilogue a little less than a year after. In WIP2, they are 2 years older. The only person (un)affected by age is Nefi, who is 21 in WIP2, but looks 17, which cause some issues.

#MythAugust (30) While I try to make the story as mortal as possible, religion and gods are a big part of the story. The cult of Fulla and Fulla herself is a big part of WIP1. The goddess Bastet and Trikruna’s crusade on Iteru is important in WIP2.

#MythAugust (28) Locus is a common insult because it represents Isfet’s ideas. Umbra, the name for the underworld, is ‘minor’ swearing, used to highlight a point. Swearing on your deity’s name is also common, and frown upon. “Rot me sideways” is a LM phrase. “Stone-brain/heart” is a Volla insult.

Well, here you will see my MS Paint skills along side this #WIPSnip. Hopefully How I describe it matches the pic but 🤷. Mother Victoria is the Hierophant of the cult of Fulla. She comes up a lot, but she only shows up in person on the page for like 4 chapters.

“These are my stables,” the elder woman corrected, not liking his tone.

Aldous did not know exactly how old she was. She had silver hair that was thinning, and deep lines around her eyes and mouth. Her face and hands were thin and bony, but she wasn’t frail. She didn’t hunch over or shake like the other elders did. She had a strong voice too that Aldous doubted she toned down for anyone.

She dressed in her long white religious robes. The symbol of Fulla, a zigzag with a line straight down, meant to represent half a pine tree, was embroidered in a golden yellow. Covering her shoulder was a mantle of scale mail, dyed purple. Her outfit was Impractical for abbey work, yet she navigated the area with such grace and agility, they remained immaculate.

But for all her contradictions, it was the look in her eyes that everyone remembered. Unforgiving and now fixed on Aldous with a warning. She was not in the mood to argue.
