Some pretty great incidental juxtaposition in the TL tonight
A screenshot of three skeets in a row: On top is Dr. Damien P. Williams commenting on how Effective Altruism is "just utilitarianism taken to its worst possible extent," linking as example an article where Sam Altman declares that "The world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of AI." Below that is a completely independent skeet from Ben Collins saying, in part, "Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work." Below that is a response to Ben's skeet from Ian Coldwater saying "The are acting like this because they are true believers in a millennarian cult. Seriously. That's the answer."

The fact that I saw this vehicle in the parking lot for the Whole Foods on Haight St. is a little on the nose.

Fact: fires keep Sunday Scaries away
Photograph of my fireplace with a fire beginning to roll. Above the hearth is a textured white picture I’ve never really liked. On either side of the fireplace are bookshelves filled with semi-haphazardly placed books, a mishmash of colored spines. In front of the fire are blonde wood floors, covered by a carpet of a grey diamond pattern. A round marble coffee table holding a fern sits to the left edge of the photo. The photo is from my perspective sitting on the couch, and you can see the chaise on which I’m sitting covered by a grey striped blanket. My closed laptop rests on the couch next to me, its cover adorned by a sticker containing the Hieroglyphics logo. On top of that is a closed book (“I Hear a New World” by Alan Moore, if you must know)

Dear god, Andy Burnham's son is an extraordinarily large one, isn't he? It feels rash to dedicate to memory any British Prime Minister just yet, let alone a PM's progeny. But this lad, as I'm sure he's accustomed to doing, has already just shoved his way into my brain.
A photo of U.K. Prime Minister (as of the evening of September 12, 2026) Andy Burnham and family, including Burnham's parents, wife, and 3 children. One of the Burnham children is a terrifically grand boy, easily the size of his siblings combined and then some. I've not learned the considerably-sized lad's name yet, as it feels premature to dedicate memory to a member of a British Prime Minister's family just yet, even one occupying as much space as this man does.

A photograph of an open on the ground, covered by a metal grate. Painted on the brick wall in front front of the grate are the words "STAND ON GRATE / PISS ON WALL." Under this someone has added the words "SLEEP ON THE FLOOR / DREAM ABOUT ME" in reference to the song "Anthems for a seventeen year-old girl" by Broken Social Scene

This is going to make some extremely wealthy people extremely goddamned angry and I love that for us.
Screenshot from The Almanac, a Midpeninsula local newspaper that covers parts of Silicon Valley, including the town of Atherton. Atherton is one of the wealthiest towns in human history. The clipped article reads, in part:

“Alpha X RE Capital Inc. filed an application under Senate Bill 79 to replace a single-family home on a 1-acre lot at 110 Glenwood Ave. with five townhome buildings totaling 30 units, with six of the designated affordable units.

Who edits the Bee these days @nytimes.com? Mary, Queen of Scots?
A screenshot from the New York Times puzzle game, The Spelling Bee, for July 30, 2026. It shows that "Huguenot" is not an accepted word. Mary, Queen of Scots encouraged the arrest and torture of Huguenots during her Consort reign, because she was quite a mean and bigoted lady. The New York Times appears to be supporting and carrying on her campaign of Huguenot erasure.

Chloë Sevigny wearing a Free Winona shirt with Harmony Korine glowering in the background. It's like a scene Bret Easton Ellis would write if he was 20 years younger. The aughts were simultaneously extremely corny and cool as hell.
A photograph taken in a bar of the actress Chloë Sevigny wearing a white t-shirt with a stencil of Winona Ryder's profile across the chest and and words "FREE WINONA" surrounding the profile. Chloë is wearing a red blazer and holding a bottle of Budweiser. To her left is an unknown and visibly intoxicated woman in a diaphanous blank tank-top with one hand on Chloë's should and a bottle of Corona in the other. Film director Harmony Korine is mugging for the camera behind the pair, his head peeking out between theirs.

Damn this block got hot. I remember when it was just a quiet neighborhood. Now that Breast Milk set claimed it.
A sheet of plywood covering the wall of a boarded-up former restaurant. The plywood is painted dark maroon, then over that is a tag in black spray paint that just says “BREAST MILK”

You're still tryna tell me there's still debate over whether or not this man sings along to every word on 69 Love Songs?
A photograph of Pedro Pascal wearing a crimson sleeveless, cotton v-neck sweater, cut-off jorts with a 3" inseam, yellow socks, and untied Timbs. He is staring straight at the camera through clear aviator frames, wavy hair tussled, and clean mustache lined up exactly with the break between his lips. He is flexing his right arm non-nonchalantly, highlighting a triceps that is more developed than either his deltoid or biceps. He is sitting on a dark brown leather couch, knees raised so that his feet rest on the edge of the couch, legs splayed to expose the crotch of aforementioned jorts.

I need a @kartoonistkelly.bsky.social update to this stunning 1875 political cartoon describing a grasshopper infestation of Western Kansas. Some 12.5 Trillion of these winged mf'ers got together to, among other things, choke out farmers and carry off bags o' beans.
A political cartoon portraying human-sized grasshoppers making mischief on the ranch of a humble farmer called Granger. Grasshoppers are seen choking the Granger, absconding with bags of "greenbacks" and "beans," while a another photographing the mayhem. Still other pests may be seen baling up wheat, driving the Grangers' horse & carriage, and dining on melon. An inset shows two grasshoppers relaxing, apparently after making the farm their new home, with the caption "In the wheat, by and by." The cartoon dates the events of the scene to "'75" and the work itself to "'75"

Blessed tl juxtaposition
A screenshot of two adjacent posts in my Bluesky Timeline. The post on top is from a thread by Oleksandra Matviichuk, a human rights lawyer from Kiev and leader of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Centre for Civil Liberties. It shows a picture of a frozen Kiev apartment building stairwell covered in ice due to a lack of power, but also a second photo of pan of eggs cooking over a butane camp stove. The post reads "In the stairwell, she met several other people who also did not know this woman but brought her necessary items. Perhaps we are a tired but morally healthy society. Because people support those who are struggling and help each other. 1/8"

The post on bottom is a from an automated account that posts quotes from the author Ursula K. Le Guin. The quote reads "It is very hard for evil to take hold of the unconsenting soul."

Two skeets appearing one after the other. The first contains a link to plans for 3-d printing a very loud, yet inexpensive and resource-efficient whistle. The next is a photo of a Welcome Board for the Judson Memorial Baptist Church in Minneapolis that reads "Blessed are the whistle blowers for they play the music of salvation"

Reading an article on Bloomberg now requires that I waive my rights to class-action lawsuit participation and explicitly agree to arbitration resolution for I assume all other civil conflicts. The internet is such a neat place these days.

Apparently not even Trump invoking Kipling's name will get the media to learn from Kipling. Which, fair, Rudyard Kipling is terrible. But still:
A stanza from Rudyard Kipling's poem "Dane-geld," which reads

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.
