My point, ultimately, is that focusing on a "fix" is misguided. It isn't ill-intended. It just won't work.

What if students felt like they had more opportunities to explore their interests? What if the food was good? What if the cafeteria was pleasant and the library was stuffed with books they actually want to read? What if all students knew they could see a nurse or a counselor if they needed? 7/n

What if schools were places students wanted to be? What if every young person could count on feeling safe, being known, and sharing a sense of connection at school? What if students knew that, in addition to their “core” academic work, there would be time every day for art, music, and play? 6/n

Does focusing more on academic achievement lead to more academic achievement? Maybe. But it may also make school less enjoyable and less interesting, which may in turn lead to lower levels of attendance, more misbehavior, and deeper disengagement. And that would undermine academic achievement. 5/n

One pain point for students is that school is dreary...and our policy paradigm has made things worse, not better. I will never suggest schools shouldn't be focused on academics or that aims like literacy and numeracy shouldn’t be primary. But if schools are ecosystems, we can't just turn dials. 4/n

Another pain point for teachers is that they feel under-supported. As schools have increasingly become frontline social service institutions, reducing some of the load-intensity on teachers is essential if we want them to be successful in the classroom. 3/n

One persistent pain point for teachers is around the issue of time. Teachers have too much to do and too little time to do it. As a result, lesson planning, professional development, student feedback, and a whole host of essential activities are undermined. What if we took that seriously? 2/n

I don't disagree. But, as I wrote back to these reporters, I am most optimistic about projects that respond to the expressed concerns of students and teachers. These are the people who spend 180 days inside schools each year, and they're the key actors in the process of teaching and learning. 1/n
