I’ve seen a few folks comment that “Guinea-Bissau is a low income country and cannot afford the hep B vaccine birth dose, so why is this study unethical?” It’s a good question. Let me have a go at answering it. In a nutshell, researchers cannot ethically exploit poverty & scarcity to do a trial

Just a reminder: 163 articles were published on Jason Arday in the week after he resigned. Same outlets: 13 articles on Cambridge academic James Orr after allegations of misconduct & a broadcast showing him seemingly engaging in illegal activity. bylinetimes.com/2026/08/18/t...

Well, we can clearly start with gutting science, education, and creative industries, while sending kids back to the mines. At least that seems to be the plan at the moment.

Human civilisation made its final mistake when we started calling coders "engineers". Sure, at Hamilton's point in time it maybe made sense, but she absolutely failed to foresee that using the name without real engineering tarining and qualification tests will kill us all.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

As tiresome as it is to hear Andy Burnham saying "innovation nation" over and over, it's arguably even worse to hear this talk of industrialisation. We have great, valuable export industries in the arts, TV, the BBC and higher education. All are being filleted; thousands out of work, and what for?

Lol. Should the greens have not self-immolated on live tv this week, they could have had a real shot at this. Though between their racism and Labour racism, there wasn't a real choice anyway.

Universities bring in foreign students ... to undercut the wages of American residents? What? This is exactly backwards. Foreign students subsidize the tuition of American students. I wonder why the VP who follows Nazis online has this all wrong. Probably an innocent, non-racist mistake.

Yet again, the EU surrenders to Trump. After facing pressure from the US State Department, @kajakallas.bsky.social's EU foreign service pulled out of a conference this week at the last minute – because one of the panels dared to discuss American disinfo in Europe.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) claims it dropped out of #Disinfo2026 "following changes to the framing of several panel discussions." GAC was scheduled to chair my panel today on disinformation in the Arctic. But, our panel description hasn't changed since June...! Receipts in the next post below.

Athens is such a funny example too. The Elgin marbles are quite famously in London now because of two empires basically dividing spoils over conquered Greece.

Denmark and Sweden have fraction of UK's population and neither are in the world's top 20 by GDP. UK is nominally 5th in the world. (Actually both have economies smaller than Poland).

I'm fairly confident that we will rebuild some other mediating institutions, mostly because people generally prefer being free over not being free and not being at war over being at war. I also think that being almost 40 I won't live to see it.

Not to mention that there was an incredible (and a true landmark) show at the Barbican in London in 2019. A fully individual retrospective, and also a much bigger exhibition. Krasner has been out of Pollock's shadow for some time.

The problem is not whether the UK will _actually_ join any of these. The problem is finding out if Brits are capable of sitting down, listening, and accepting they aren't exactly God's gift to the EU. Currently that is not the case, and the cakeism on these issues proves that point.

This is a very good thread (as per usual), but the question imo is not about being able to, but even willing to try. Nothing so far has indicated that Burnham's view of migration is much different from Corbyn's/Farage's/Mahmood's, i.e. that's the biggest overarching problem UK faces.
