This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

Solidarity with Emily Tucker and her open letter to students. Tucker writes, "But the great thing is, you don’t have to go along with this, and I urge you not to. You can refuse to use the chatbot. You can tell your professors that you don’t want them to use it or to require you to use it."

This is one reason why you shouldn’t upload work into LLMs during the peer review and grading processes. That work is confidential, and you have no right to share it without permission. You are taking someone’s intellectual property and giving it to the entire world without their consent.

I saw the community reaction here from experts who know what they are looking at when this win was announced - it was robust and loud. We are collectively losing the ability to tell whats real - scientists should be acting hard against that not contributing…Im glad that the prize has been re-awarded

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

A bit surprised by the Kagan/Soai Nobel Prize. Definitely a missed opportunity for Donna Blackmond to be recognised for her outstanding work on understanding the physical organic chemistry and mathematical detail of these processes. What could it possibly be about HER that meant SHE got overlooked?

There’s a concerted campaign to undermine EDI in Canada. The evidence behind EDI policies reducing excellence are based on abysmal, flawed evidence. Look at who feels threatened by equity, diversity and inclusion. They’re the least diverse, least equitable and most exclusive people. Just no.

When women do publish, they are cited less: compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... you can of course look at this a bunch of ways, but one comment the authors of this piece made that stuck with me was this: "reference lists tend to cite more papers by men than expected based on" (see next)

Again, longer peer review => fewer paper => lower h index. Anyway, to continue - women-authored papers are under-represented in prestigious journals: www.nature.com/articles/d41... and its not because of differences in submission rate, but review outcome. Again, this is gonna affect your h index..
