AFAIK the rights to the Palladium creations remain with Palladium. I had thought the TMNT Redux deal would have included acquiring that part of the IP, but apparently not, last I heard.

I think 2003 is probably the most true to at Laird's vision of the trutles, the last few seasons aside, given he got to give a ton of direct input. But 2012 had its own really strong balance of goofiness and darker elements.

This episode had me wondering if the creators were taking inspiration from a certain other role-playing game. #tmnt

Donatello and Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 cartoon examine the rubble of an attack in trenchcoats. Donatello holds up a blasted piece of debris, saying, "Look, a mini-missile."

From the same episode, the "Destructor X" robot enters an apartment, looking like a muscle-bound robot where one arm and leg are skeletal and the other two are muscular, it has a masked skull face, spiked shoulder, and a large storage tank on its back.

The "Destructor X" opens its chest to reveal a large cannon that basically fills its entire torso, and says, "Commencing destruction sequence."

There are several episodes that point out--as consistent as the show ever is--that Shredder wants to conquer the world because he's disgusted at the idea of working a "real" job, he thinks that conquering the world will allow him to kick back, and is horrified to discover that isn't remotely true.

1987 TMNT clicks a lot more when you realize it's a goofball comedy very much first and a superhero adventure show extremely second, it's parodical in that sense but it's hard to notice just because so many toy-driven shows were very silly to begin with, some of them even deliberately so!

By Season 6 the lampshading just starts to hit a fever pitch, like Krang pointing out that it's his job to explain the plot or Leo realizing every time April reports on an invention, Shredder tries to steal it. (Ironically, he's not involved in that particular episode.)

A reminder that the TMNT are revealed to the world and celebrated for saving it at the end of Season 1, and are back to hiding at the start of Season 2. Beyond a certain point they're clearly writing with the attitude of "it's just a show, you should really just relax."

I avoided doing things like an option to select a species in Mutants in the Now for just that reason; people who are gonna feel strongly enough to do the thing will do it, you don't need me to tell you to do it. (But I would still suggest trying your hand at letting randomness do its thing.)

Obviously I still had far greater access to game books overall and the prices for them were more reasonable, it's not the same, but being relatively poor here in the US meant that if somebody were running a game and I wanted access to the text away from the table, it was one of the better solutions.

Borrowing and copying game books as a means of piracy here in the states wasn't that unusual back in the '90s and '00s, at least in my experience. My strat was to pick and choose only the parts I felt were absolutely necessary for what I needed to play to save money on the overall copy costs. #ttrpg
