underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.

The problem with this analysis is that fascism relies on aesthetics and an assault on knowledge. When AI makes people throw up their hands and give up on trying to figure out what's real, fascism thrives.

A few years into the era of easy-to-generate AI images, videos, and text, the status quo is a mess, if not quite the crisis predicted by many AI firms and their critics. Generated images and videos have, as many worried, become a force in politics, but the assault on democracy has been mostly aesthetic rather than strategically deceptive, contributing to a general sense of uncertainty and unreality; likewise, across platforms where people congregate online, automated content has often behaved like rapidly advancing spam, glutting cultural spaces and marketplaces and exacerbating their worst tendencies. (When generative AI was new, the prevailing political fears were of high-stakes deepfakes and targeted disinformation. So far, what we’ve gotten is slopaganda.)

This rhetoric is ideal for listeners who believe trans women are an issue that they're supposed to care about, but don't actually have any real-world experience with them. The hypothetical trans girl who's supposedly causing all this trouble in the WNBA is the perfect tool for the conservative movement. She can't fight back, she can't disprove anyone's assumptions, and she can't garner sympathy when she's the target of hate. The perfect trans girl is the one who only exists in the imagination of the loudest cis people. Her monstrousness, the need to "protect young girls in a locker room" from her, gives them permission to enact policies that in reality only harm the anonymous girls, cis and trans, who want to play sports without the invasive scrutiny of gender-obsessed adults.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
