Post-recovery birding trip today: 25 km round trip by bike to a local gravel pit, then a few hours in a bird hide photographing waders in flight. Harsh midday light, and birds keeping 20-30 m away. Still, I managed a few shots of these (possibly) Ruffs. #photography #birds

This morning a Grey Heron allowed me to approach carefully and spend some time watching it hunt along the shallow parts of the Morava river. The highlight was a funny territorial dispute with a much smaller Mallard duck, which seemed convinced the heron shouldn't be there. #birds #photography

Only a very quick birding stop today at a remote pond. Someone had dumped a huge pile of seeds at the only observation point. As they fermented and warmed up, they attracted lots of grass snakes. Only regulars seen, but remarkable session spent encircled by snakes :) #birds #snakes #photography

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme by @robcrank68.bsky.social is #BestOfTheMonth. I chose this White-tailed Ptarmigan I met off trail near the Athabasca Glacier. Its camouflage was so effective I almost stepped on it. Fortunately, it was not shy so I could took some pics even with 100mm lens. #birds

I think I see what you mean. The pic was shot close to midday under the direct light, all colours are washed out significantly. But anyways, even sooner, water in the lake appeared more bluish than truly emerald 🤷🏻 note: the haze is most probably from wildfires

I believe that it is because of the fine rock particles grinded by the glaciers, as they scatter sunlight in the water. Similar colour has Lake Louise, which was. originally named emerald lake, too

Hummingbird Hawk Macroglossum stellatarum emerged 830 am yesterday 36 days since egg laid 630 pm 17 June at Quince Honey Farm, South Molton, Devon - an amazingly quick life cycle. In this record year the caterpillars are fairly easy to find on Bedstraws growing in sunny spots like walls and dunes.

Today I was experimenting with very slow shutter speeds (1/125-1/250 s) at an 800 mm full-frame equivalent. Juvenile redstarts made excellent subjects, posing calmly just before sunset. #birds #photography
